Hyperthyroid Puss Help Required

FettleOfKish · 27/07/2023 20:42

Our dear 13 year old boy has recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and started medication about a month ago.

We've noticed that his face has some sore patches now, which I've read can be a side effect. I've not seen him itching but he's been spending more time in his safe space under the bed so must be doing it there.

He's back in the vet in the next week or two for more bloods so I'll ask them then, but in the meantime does anyone have any tips to soothe it or make him more comfortable?

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry you've had no replies but your OP caught my eye as my DCat has just been diagnosed with this. I hope you got to the bottom of his sore face and he is feeling better now. They are such a worry aren't they!

Thanks for the reply.

He's looking and feeling a bit better now, back for more blood tests end of week but in the meantime our vet assured me that sudocrem is safe to use on him to provide relief and hopefully prevent infection on sore skin, so that's good to know.

We've also got him a Feliway plug in as I suspect some of it might be stress related. He's always been very anxious / nervous as he's ex-feral, and I think the extra vet visits recently have unsettled him even more.

Nothing wrong with his appetite or ability to shout at us though, so I'm taking that as two wins.

I think we must have the same cat! Mine is also very vocal, loves his food and such a nervy wimp.

I'm glad he's doing well, I used sudocrem on another of my cats when he had sun damage on his ears, it's very soothing.

What colour is your boy?

FettleOfKish · 02/08/2023 20:03

He's pure black, I've tried to add a picture but the app isn't showing it.

Mine is black and white, he will be 16 in october. We lost his brother two years ago, he had lung cancer, we also have their sister who is a tortie and a white cat who adopted us, he had to have his ears amputated as he had a lot of sun damage.

Can I ask what medication your boy is on and how do you give it to him, I'm very new to this illness so all advice is appreciated.

I know you came on here looking for advice and I'm sorry that I can't help but it's good to know someone else is going through the same thing.

No worries! He takes Vidalta tablets daily. He's not been too bad so far, we mix it up a bit, sometimes in a bit of cheese or wrapped in a slither of ham, sometimes in a licky lick and sometimes just in his wet food. He's pretty good (and greedy enough) to wolf it down without noticing.

I'm sorry about your boy's brother Sad

We are going to try him on the liquid first as he is so suspicious of anything mixed in his food and we will have to feed him away from the others as they can't eat the same food, fun times ahead!

I have had cats all my life but none of them have ever had this, I'll let you know how we get on.
