Very poorly cat.

So far my 11.5 yo lady has had blood tests ruling out hyperthyroidism, steroids, pre biotics, probiotics, antibiotics and vitamins. She has lost masses of weight but eats more than ever, and has 10/12 bouts of diarrhoea a day. She's never been an outdoor cat (her choice) but always liked to look outside, and watch the birds and squirrels. Now when not eating she just lies on her side on the floor. She isn't drinking copious amounts so the vet doesn't think it's diabetes.
I'm struggling to cope with the constant cleaning up, feeding, and smells. I work over 50 hrs a week, have a disabled adult daughter who is struggling with the car being so ill and it's making my other 2 cats stressed too. We also live in a rented house and I'm scared they'll ask for an inspection.
I don't know what to do for my lovely old lady cat. I think it's probably cancer. The next tests will be a scan but she gets so scared going to the vets that she hid for 2 days afterwards last time.
What would you do, in my shoes?
Thank you.

Hey OP

i think I can tell what you may be thinking and looking for reassurance?

I think what struck me is that your cat isn’t enjoying life like they used to. To by lying down all day when no eating seems a bit sad. It’s very difficult to be the owner in this situation though - I’ve been there.

How is your vet, are they good to talk to? It might be worth chatting to them to see what realistic options you have

I think cancer too I'm afraid. It all sounds very similar to one of my cats - he died when he was 12, stomach cancer (leiomyosarcoma). Maybe suggest that to your vet. Big hugs x

11.5 isn’t anywhere near old for cat. I hope your vet can get to the bottom of her ailment.

BungleandGeorge · 25/07/2023 00:00

I’d suspect cancer too, there’s usually markers in bloods, it might be worth getting a copy of the bloods and a second opinion on them? How long has the diarrhoea etc been going on? It’s not always the kindest option to do ‘everything’. Life doesn’t sound happy for your cat at the moment. I think you need to discuss with your vet what they are looking for in the scan. Is there an explanation that is not cancer? The problem with cats is that they often hide their illnesses until they’re far gone.

Thank you all for your replies. I know that it's not old fir a cat, but it's not young either. I think she does have cancer.
I will talk to the vet tomorrow. Thank you all again.

Just to update- we had her booked in for a scan on Thursday, but she took the decision out of our hands and we lost her this morning. I will miss her so much. Sleep tight little lady 💕
