European heatwave and cats

I live in Cyprus and it's hot, like 38c. This is unusual for the time of year, it's usually 32c.

My poor cats just stagger about trying to find a cool place to sleep, they are very lethargic and don't eat much. In an ideal world I would leave the AC on for them but unfortunately I can't afford to do that. Kloppy has worked out that I have a fan next to my bed and he sits there with his whiskers wafting in the draught 😹

Honestly, it's tough for them with their fur coats - spare a thought for your continental furry MN cat buddies overseas 😁

can you freeze a bottle of ice and put it infront of the fan ? works like a charm

We wet their heads and ears regularly throughout the day. Helps them cool off a bit.

I also wet a towel and leave it on the floor for they to lie on.

I do the wet towel thing. It hasn't been this bad for a couple of years.

if you can and if they let you, wet a cloth and damp their fur a bit, icepack underneath their water bowl.

Oh and they have ice cubes in their water bowl.

When I first got Kloppy he was a young nutter and got heatstroke - never seen a cat panting before!

I called the vet in a panic - he said "Eh, just put him under the AC and give him a little water, he'll be fine"

He was fine 😂

Kloppy is beautiful.

Meanwhile in NW England its cold, windy, wet and the hooligans are DISGUSTED and HORRIFIED that the ☀️ is missing and they iz very very cold.

When I visited Athens a few years ago, our local guide pointed out the "mad English cat-ladies" who walked around the hills of the Acropolis with wicker baskets, making sure the feral cats were neutered, fed and generally looked after. I hope they're managing to keep the colonies healthy in the heatwave.

And floppy Kloppy is just asking for his tum to be smooshed!

The cats pictured above are being pleasingly dramatic. Belly rubs for them!

Kloppy does love his belly being smooshed, he also makes a contented groaning/purring noise when you smoosh him 😸

We have cat ladies (and men) here too who patrol and feed cat colonies, they also trap and neuter them at the local cat charity. Unfortunately it's an ongoing battle as (some) Cypriots believe in keeping cats for vermin control but not neutering 🙄
