Old cat and toiletting

My lovely boy is 17. He's slowed down a lot in the last couple of years. He lost one eye last year due to an ulcer and has damage and repetitive infections in the other. He has started weeing and pooing in the house. He also has had a couple of bouts of diarrhoea in the past couple of weeks.

Is this just what happens when cats get older? I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow as I've just cleaned up a massive puddle of poo from under DD2s bed. I'm just so worried as he's my oldest baby Sad
