My cats lost his meow

My 6yr old cat has never been very vocal but certainly let us know if he wanted food or to go out. Over the last few days though I've noticed that when he trys to meow all that comes out is a little squeak!
Hes fine within himself, eating plenty (greedy!) and no discharge from eyes or mouth, any advice? Pic for tax!

I'd get him looked at sooner rather than later to rule out anything sinister. There can be numerous causes of a missing meow, from the innocuous to the awful. I'd definitely want to make sure he hasn't swallowed anything.

Thank you @BillyNoM8s . I'll get get him booked in, thats going to be fun, he barely tolerates us as it is nevermind getting him into the carrier 😂

Hopefully something minor but my cat suddenly had a missing meow and it turned out he had lymphoma involving his larynx. He was otherwise as bouncy as usual. He needs to see the vet. Best wishes.

Theunamedcat · 10/07/2023 19:54

My old cat lost his miow the vet said he had stressed his voice box he thought he might have got stuck somewhere and shouted? If you see what I mean it came back and turned out he had some sore bits too so pretty sure he got trapped

Best get it checked out

Spookyseason · 10/07/2023 19:54

My very vocal cat lost her voice once. Only a tiny croak came out. Vet said she had a sore throat just like we get. It was better very quickly and she was back to yelling at me.

Spookyseason · 10/07/2023 19:58

Thank you @coastergirl. Im hoping thats all it is .

My cat lost his miaow with laryngitis. A few days with anti-inflammatory meds and it came back :)

ScottBakula · 10/07/2023 20:13

I think my cat stole it , he has been shouting at me all evening ( neighbours cat taunting him )
I agree with pp you cat probably has a sore throat but it's best to get him checked out.

Not hayfever or cold? I don't have much experience of cats, so apologies if I shouldn't be commenting (the thread came up in active and I was like "aaaw, poor cat having lost its miaow, sounds so sad" ) but I had a guinea pig who lost her squeak. She was trying to go "wheek wheek" loudly for her veggies as she did every morning but all that came out was a muffled damp sort of snuffle.

Turns out she had a little cold (not pneumonia which I had been worried about ) so I kept her warm and dabbed a tiny bit of Vicks vaporub on her nose (it's safe to use in v small quantities). A few hours later she was squeaking with gusto as per usual!

All the best with your kitty getting that miaow back. 💐

He had several lots of chemo. Chemo for animals isn’t like chemo for humans as vets aren’t really going for a cure, just more time. He was absolutely fine with this and had no ill effects. This got rid of the big patch on his larynx but sadly, some months later the lymphoma returned in his chest. I decided that as he was fourteen there would be no more treatment for him and he lived happily for another few months until he started to get breathless. He was put to sleep at home on my lap before he was in any way distressed.

DrCoconut · 10/07/2023 20:44

Unfortunately it was the first sign of FIV with my cat. It's probably not that bad but I'd get it checked out.

Spookyseason · 10/07/2023 20:47

Im sorry to hear that @AppleDumplingWithCustard , it sounds like you did your ver best for him and gave him a good end x

@3GuineaPigs My sister has 9 piggies, she seems to be at the vet every other week with one thing or another, costs her a fortune, good job they're cute eh?

I had this thread title earlier this year! My cat was 18 in May (so 17 when I worried about her lack of miaow). And it came back. I have no idea why it went or indeed how it reappeared, but she is pretty noisy again. Hope that yours does the same, @Spookyseason .

Kellioo · 10/07/2023 22:34

I posted the same last month. He had no meow/very croaky for about 9 days then suddenly just came back.

Spookyseason · 10/07/2023 22:51

Thank you @HuntingoftheSnark I hope so too.
