Kittens - 1 or 2?

hellsbells99 · 04/07/2023 10:39

We have always had cats. We currently have 2 - very different ages and they don’t particularly get on. Previous cats have always got on together and enjoyed each others company.
A friend got 2 kittens from the same litter and as adult cats, they are always fighting.
My adult DD is looking to get a kitten - the only thing that makes her homesick is missing our cats! She works mainly from home. Her dilemma is does she get 1 kitten or 2? Any insights would be welcome.

I've always had two (except once when we got three). Never regretted it, some pairs were truly bonded, and the others have rubbed along quite happily.
So I'd go for two every time, because kittenhood is so much better for a pair of siblings

I do recognise that my experience doesn't match everybody else's though.

Mine have been adult rescues so I got boycat alone, he seemed lonely so I got girl cat and she did NOT want to be friends. Now boy cat has passed away girl cat is very happy on her own. I believe the advice with kittens is to get a pair. In my experience boys require more company than girls. If I was to adopt kittens I would get a pair in the hope they get along and have a lifelong friend.

Sorry, my post didn't make much sense. What I'm trying to say is it is hard to find the perfect match with adult cats so better to get a pair to begin with as I believe siblings are more likely to get along.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2023 11:23

I'd get a pair. I tend to have either boys or girls. I find they get on better.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 04/07/2023 11:42

Two.

We just got a solo kitten as we can't really afford the jump from 2-4 cats but also our existing cats are super-laid back and friendly and have always welcomed kittens and other cats.

2 kittens are so much fun and mean they are less needy of adults, I've found. Ours were littermates from a rescue and got on well all their very long lives, despite being completely different in looks and personality

I've always wondered if two of the same sex is the best? although my dn has a boy and girl not related and they snuggle.

Adult bonded pair might be the answer. You know they get on then.

Florissante · 04/07/2023 17:28

Get two.

JoeyRamonesHair · 04/07/2023 20:56

We have two from two different litters (same birthday though, weirdly). They're also both female. After an inital 4-5 days of hissing when they met they're each other's best friend now.

Thanks for all your replies. We have been to visit some at an animal rescue centre tonight and still undecided. The woman there said obviously if you get two together then you normally end up with both being expensive at the same time - particularly when they get old and have expensive vet bills. She said she had a couple of years between hers. I have about 7 years between mine - but also did have a third older cat who unfortunately died a couple of years ago.
All of the cats and kittens were gorgeous and we wanted to bring them all home. The kittens aren’t quite ready to rehome yet.

Get 2 bonded adults from a rescue centre, you know they will definitely get on then

hellsbells99 · 10/07/2023 19:47

So DD decided to get two sister kittens from the rescue centre. She has had them 3 days now and they are settling in amazing well.

Two kittens, or mum and kitten pair.

Florissante · 10/07/2023 20:20

That's great news, @hellsbells99. Please keep us updated on how they get on.

Aw, so cute 😍
As others have said definitely go for two that get on well with each other.

Florissante · 10/07/2023 22:13

They are adorable!

hellsbells99 · 10/07/2023 23:06

They are so sweet and very close to each other - cuddling up in bed to sleep etc.

I have kitten envy 😁
I have a 12yo male, sadly his mate died earlier this year, but I don't he'd cope with kittens running around now.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/07/2023 08:26

Very cute - but where did they get those massive ears from? 🙀😹

Florissante · 11/07/2023 09:40

Massive ears are all the rage this year, @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats.

Ooh, how lovely they are!

Always two (unless 3!)
