Cat attacking us in the evening!

We recently adopted a male rescue cat. He is about 4 years old and neutered. Friendly and sweet natured during the day but in the evening he attacks us unprovoked. Not playful attacking but very aggressive pouncing on ankles or arms with his ears back and painful scratching/biting

Kids now terrified of him in the evening and I have to admit I am on edge now too! Should we just keep him outside in the evening to let him work off his aggression?

Anyone got any thoughts?

My cat/kitten (18 months) does this too. It’s sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening. I try to distract him with a toy on a string or a cat cigar but it doesn’t always work. Sometimes it’s unprovoked, sometimes it’s when he’s come for a cuddle and then suddenly he turns on me. Same - tail going, pupils dilated, ears back and when he does it, I’m scared of him. Yesterday he drew blood on my ankles. I have no idea why it is, but I’m hoping it stops as the other 23.5 hours of the day he’s soft and gentle.
