TMI - Cat food!!

xoomer · 19/06/2023 13:55

Literally within 2/3 hours of putting out the cats food I see tiny maggots forming.

Now usually she eats it up but with the weathers she's been leaving it.

I'm fed up of the flies.
I'm fed up of the off smell.
I'm fed up wasting cat food.

We usually give her pouches.

I'm wondering whether it's better to move onto tins and give her a bit every so often and buy those can cap things.

It's never been much of an issue over the past 4 years.

Any advice?
Thank
You xx

I just put down less than they want usually, so half a pouch and then fridge the rest

Also had the Surefeed bowl for my last cat. Current cat has gourmet pouches which flies don't seem keen on.

Oh no! Um, are the eggs already in the food does anyone know or is it is the process just that quick for flies in summer?

What about a covered, chipped feeder so that the food isn't left exposed?

We use tins and keep in fridge (if you drink Kenco Millicano / Nescafé Azera type coffee, the lids from these tins fit on cat food cans).

I've found feeding the cats later when it's cooler means more gets eaten. So I give them dry food in the morning, then a small amount of dry food at their normal tea time (5 ish) but give them their wet food at around 9. They're quite hungry by then and generally eat it but I give a small portion and top up if they're still looking for food once they've eaten it.

In the heat, my cat prefers biscuits and plenty of water. I give her half a pouch once or twice a day, and refrigerate it in between, with a big freezer clip to keep it closed.

Hi thanks all. It didn't occur to me to put it in the fridge.

Yes I've heard about the coffee pot lids. My dd hates flies and will leave her food if she sees one.
