A weird one

So my cat is approx 13 this year (he's a rescue I've had about 6 years so it's an estimated age). In the last week every time I sit on the sofa he's got up behind me and started to lick my head? He does it to our dog sometimes when he gets home from daycare and it's 50/50 whether it's just a gentle lick and headbutt or if it's a lick and a bite/swipe so the poor dog hates it! It therefore makes me nervous because I don't know which I'm going to eat although he's not bitten or swiped at me yet. Can anyone explain this weird behaviour (he's never ever done this to me before) and any suggestions on how I can stop it?

Is it because you both smell different so he's trying to put home/his smell back on you?

Your dog because it's been surrounded by other dogs and smells of them, you because of the heat you are sweating more and secreting more salts/odours?

That's affection!

@INeedAnotherName oh maybe, I hadn't thought of that! I definitely think with our dog it's a 'you smell different' thing because it's only after he's been out walking or at daycare.

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts are you sure? Lol he's generally an affectionate wee thing but he's got form for being a hallion when you least expect it! I've been trying to encourage him to come on my lap for a cuddle instead when he does it but he seems to have no interest.

The other thing is he does it usually around meal times- no other time. I think he's trying to annoy me into feeding him early. He has absolutely 'trained' me in that respect before until I caught on and ignored him lol.

My girl used to bite your head if you were lying on the sofa or looked poorly. I always felt it was her way of showing affection and caring.

Mine bats my head from behind when he thinks it's food time. He does this before checking to see if there's actually any food in his bowl. Shit bag.
