Smelly Cat

As the title my cat is very smelly.
Shes 14 months old. After sitting on me, my clothes smell to the point I have to take them off and wash them. I think the smell must be coming from her bottom as you can’t smell it on her fur, she is otherwise very clean looking and she’s not wiping a dirty bum on me.
I switched her food a few months ago, because my other cat has allergies and she does seem to smell overall much better, so not sure if perhaps she has sensitive tum.
Shes due her annual booster soon, so will get the vet to check her over, but any ideas why she is so smelly. I’ve never experienced such an awful smell from a cat before.

Without wishing to go into gory details - what is the smell like?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/06/2023 13:24

If it's her bottom she could have blocked anal glands?

StoppoChoco · 05/06/2023 13:34

It’s not a pooh (ey) smell, I could only liken it to very bad breath. I only notice it after she’s been sat on me and she leaves the awful scent on my clothes.
She’s been neutered, so shouldn’t be hormones, if they smell ?

Is her breath ok? Could be a bad tooth or similar,
A young cat really shouldn't smell - I'd get advice from your vet if I were you.

As Grumpy said, possibly anal glands. I think it's less common in cats than dogs, but it's not rare. Does she ever seem to be trying to sort of drag her bum along the ground, or reach round to bite at the base of her tail?

If it is anal glands, the vet should just be able to squeeze them and the foul smelling liquid comes out. It may be something a bit more serious like an abscess formed, but again a relatively common and simple fix. Some cats (and dogs) are just prone to it, so she may need regular checks & treatment.

Because she's leaving the scent on my clothes, I am assuming its coming from where her bum has been. I will google it ( I am sure I will regret it ) and see if I can see anything, but she's otherwise fine and I don't think its coming from her breath, she was giving me some rare kisses this morning, so would have noticed if it was her breath.
I will just get the vet to check her over when she's getting her booster next week.

@Allergictoironing She doesn't drag her bum, but she does seem to be cleaning herself a fair bit, so possibly anal glands. I will get the vet to check her over.

I'm sorry to hear that your cat is experiencing such a strong odor. It's unusual for a cat to have such a noticeable smell, especially if she appears clean and doesn't have any visible issues. Since you switched her food a few months ago and noticed an improvement in her overall smell, it's possible that she has a sensitive stomach or digestive system. However, it's always a good idea to have her checked by a vet during her annual booster to rule out any underlying health issues. The fact that the smell seems to be coming from where her bottom has been is suggestive of potential anal gland problems. Although she doesn't drag her bum, her increased grooming behavior could be a sign of discomfort in that area. I recommend discussing these concerns with your vet, who can examine her anal glands and provide appropriate treatment if necessary.

@EloiseJ
I did notice a bit of an improvement when I changed her diet over, I put the other cat onto hypoallergenic food on vets advice.
She's been sat on me this morning and I cannot otherwise smell anything until she gets off me and I'm left thinking what is that awful smell and its the scent she leaves behind on my clothes. Anal glands sound like the likely culprit, so will get vet to check her over.
