Itchy cat

Male cat just over a year old scratches himself a lot. Therefore the fur on his back and at the top of his tail has become sparse. Had flea treatment and not sign of fleas on him. Fur also becoming brown but previous black cats we have had tend to have this in the summer due to lying in the fields in the sun.
Ideas welcome please as to help his fur look a bit better.

I’d take him to the vet. It’s probably fleas. Little bastards.

Which flea treatment are you using?

Frontline I think
But none are great 🙈
I've brushed him but can't see any

Frontlines lost its reputation years ago, a vet nurse told me it hadn’t so I asked what she used on her cat and she said advocate.

They don’t stop them getting fleas it just kills them when they bite the cat. He needs skin conditions ruling out though, he can’t be comfortable like that.

Flea dermatitis? My old cat used to get it basically one bite from a flea and he would get itchy and sometimes he wouldn't stop feeling itchy even though he had no fleas so he needed an anti itch injection from the vets
