Our middle cat passed away today

Our 6yo girl sadly passed away in my arms this morning 😭

We came downstairs and she was barely breathing - the other cats were sitting by her and she passed away within minutes. She was fine yesterday 💔

I just wanted to get it out. She was such a loving cat - she adored people and loved our other cats and our dog.

Have you got children?
I've 2 who are 7 and 8 and it's their first experience of death. They were absolutely distraught.
School have told me to send them in today.
Our other cats have been in to see him. Interestingly, the other alpha male seems to be guarding his body and has also sprayed everywhere.
My husband is burying him this morning while the children are at school.
I just can't stop crying.

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP and to WhisperingAutistic too. I have been there several times now and it never gets any easier. I am also particularly dreading the next time as it will be the DCs' first pet loss, although they have previously lost a grandparent.

We don't @WhisperingAutistic - just two other cats and a dog who seem to be absolutely fine so far luckily. At least have each other which I think helps.

We showed them the body so they could "say goodbye" - not sure if that's the right thing to do but it felt appropriate at the time 😞

Hi @coffeecupsandwaxmelts , I lost my 6 year old black cat yesterday. She'd lost a bit of weight in the last couple of weeks (but had been on a diet) but was totally fine otherwise. On Monday night, she started having breathing difficulties. We got her to the vet and she had an inoperable mass near her heart, so all we could do was let her go. We are devastated, keep wondering if we could have done anything different, but sadly the outcome was always going to be the same. Her sister has been very clingy so she knows something isn't right.

That sounds very similar to what our girl had - she was really quiet yesterday but otherwise okay and then this morning we just knew it was the end 😭

Luckily it was quick and it was only minutes between us finding her and her going so I wonder if she was waiting for us before she went 🥹

Hi @coffeecupsandwaxmelts , thank you. Yes, the vet told us they tend to hide it until they can't any longer. She had spent a lot of the weekend seeking cuddles so I think she was telling us goodbye. She was helped to the rainbow bridge, but I'm glad I got to be there at the end. I hope that is a comfort for you too, your girl was safe and loved.

Oh I am so, so sorry for your loss.. how devastating. I am pleased you got to say goodbye but how heart-breaking it is. We lost a cat to the road a few years ago and I cried so much! My kids were 3 and 5 at the time and were very upset. We buried Joe in the garden with his favourite toys and marked with a small plaque.

Even though we still have two cats and our beagle left, the house feels so empty without her. She was always the affectionate one and the noisy one who wanted cuddles and kisses as soon as I got home from work.

The others keep looking for her and hissing at the spots she lay in before she died 😞

So sorry for your loss.
I lost Ginger on Monday, we were away and he was ran over by an electric van at the top of the road.
He crosses the busy road all the time, the bugger but obviously didn't hear the electric van and the guy didn't see him.
He did help afterwards and another family took him to the vet, I had to give permission for him to be put to sleep over the phone.

I've got 2 other cats and a dog but the house is so quiet. I'm absolutely devastated. He didn't deserve to go like that.
