Cat overlord begging for food.

This is my lovely boy, he's a tripod cat 7 years old weighs 6kg with a missing leg. He had his accident when he was 1 so a long time ago. He constantly begs for food and will even steal off DDs plate if he can.
He eats 5-6 pouches a day refuses dry food. I've tried all different brands Wants different brands of food and flavours as he gets bored easily. He has vet check ups thyroid fine , no parasites. He's still very active can run, hunt.

He's literally costing a fortune as hes particular about food, vet says he's not overweight really just very long. Has anyone dealt with this? If he doesn't get his way he will bite , follow you to the toilet, lie on the floor, tries to get in the fridge. Will climb on me yowling and chattering.

He's beautiful but so high maintenance can anyone help me with my bullying cat haha!

He's a handsome boy. He probably needs more protein. Try replacing 2 of the pouches with fresh, cooked chicken, a tin of tuna (not in brine though), pilchards, or sardines. I used to buy a turkey leg and cook it, portion it up into sandwich begs, for my cats

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 12/05/2023 13:39

Our piebald is a devil for bullying you for food. Try playing with him more, you can’t beg for food if your asleep from being tuckered out.

leopardprintismyfavourite · 12/05/2023 13:46

When I read 6kg I was expecting a big cat but in truth he doesn’t look big.

I’d agree on trying more protein. Mine has Blink Cats which might be worth a try - I get a monthly subscription but they do have it in Sainsburys.

AnnaMagnani · 12/05/2023 13:52

Are you using high street brands like Felix or going for grain free all meat?

I am spending a fortune on Canagan but there is no boredom and they don't eat much of it in a day.

I am also great at ignoring when the begging starts.

HappyHolidai · 12/05/2023 13:55

Does he go outside? If he can explore he can work off some energy and catch his own supplementary food.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 12/05/2023 13:56

That face, can see who thinks they are in charge😻 Definitely would not be arguing!

Dcat has 2 small tins a day max, I think we all want your cat’s metabolism😻🤣

No answers, sorry. Dcat nibbles DH when she wants food, never does it to me🤷‍♀️

He most certainly goes out. He catches mice and hunts even with a missing leg.

I did give him a little bit of sardines and now he's having a snooze so thank you for that tip, no begging and asleep. The problem is he wants different brands every month and flavours I cycle through them have tried blink as well. He gets bored really quickly. I do play with him but he wants food most of all haha!

Yes he doesn't look that big he's really long and lean.

I had a foster cat who was a bottomless pit for food, he just ran around at top speed all day and needed a lot of fuel. In the end, I found that he loved the Butchers brand cat food in big tins which was much more economical than pouches. If he gets bored of that I would look for other big tins, they work out much cheaper.

Aintshesweet · 12/05/2023 14:33

he’s gorgeous! Agree with more protein, have you tried him on raw food?

Fifi00 · 12/05/2023 14:33

Overlord relaxed, he probably does need more food as he hunts and runs with 3 legs hahah!

He’s very handsome. My boy is still a kitten he likes Untamed and also has dry food.

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 12/05/2023 15:18

My cat is between 5.5 to 5.75kg depending on when we take him to the vet. He eats 6 sachets a day, he has been known to eat 8!! Although then he has a "fallow" day the day after and eats maybe 3.
He's also black and white (also has asymmetric facial markings).
He doesn't really like biscuits. He mainly eats wet food.
I haven't officially got him tested for anything like thyroid problems, but he looks fit and healthy, vet doesn't think he's overweight. I think maybe he is a bit bored but he's very timid and scared of his own shadow, so doesn't do much apart from mooch around the garden for a bit.
I think it's normal but yes, the cat food bill is enormous!! And he loves variety.
Luckily his sister isn't as fussy and eats whatever he leaves.
Ridiculous animals! But we love them

Oh my god they are greedy, I wish he would like some dry food. The really naughty thing he does is lie directly stretched out in the middle of the kitchen or next to the fridge as it's a bugger to move around him. Boy cats eh!!

How are you all affording 8 packets of wet food per day? Mine are on Blink and it's over £8 a box!

Mine has recently decided she only likes the salmon flavour of purina biscuits - won't touch the chicken . She will also only eat the blink fish wet food. What do you all do when your cats randomly go off the things they used to really like? Do I just keep buying random stuff and watch her ignore it? I live in fear of blink/salmon purina bring out of stock!

AnnaMagnani · 12/05/2023 15:52

8 sachets a day? Mine get 1 and a half, even the explorer who is 6kg of pure muscle.

Cat is either bored or food has too much filler in it.

Yeah we spend a lot on cat food. A lot. I'm not justifying it..! We mix it up with Felix, katkin, blink, whiskas. I dunno, I have a nearly 2 year old who is a fussy eater so as long as someone is eating something I don't care!

Well yes I'd rather he didn't but he will literally go insufferable if the food isn't right. He will bite , yowl, follow get in my way. Yes I rotate I have loads or different flavours in and I massively bulk buy. I order more if I'm down to my last 10 as he would literally go insane if there's no wet food. He's not fat so I'm guessing he must need more food than the average cat. I might try him on bozita but again he likes variety so not sure if it will accept it in the long run.

If you Google "how many sachets should the average cat eat per day?" it comes up with a number between 3-5 pouches per day. And an average cat is about 4kg? So seems "normal" for a 6kg cat to eat a third more food than average.
I think maybe dry food is more energy dense so they have to eat less of it (and less of it is water). But if the furry bullies don't go for it then what do you do?
My cat actually lost weight when my son was born because I had no choice but to ignore his constant pleas for food when I was breastfeeding. He looked skinny!
I really don't know what the answer is

girlofsandwich · 12/05/2023 23:57

What a gorgeous cat he is so cute! Loving the photos, his coat looks so soft... probably all the wet food!

My cat was the same when I adopted him. He used to live with a toddler, so he had easy access to human food, one of the main reasons they couldn't keep him. I used to eat my dinner standing up walking around he was so obsessed with food. Would nip and cry when he was hungry. I still have child locks on the cupboards.

Clean bill of health from the vets and wormed, he is just so food motivated.

What helped us was buying good quality food which it sounds like you've tried...
I was spending a fortune on Sheba and now get grain free, high meant content food from Zooplus. It works out so much cheaper now I buy cans in bulk. He likes variety, but most recently I bought Rosie' Kitchen because I like the nutritional profile. I paid about 69e for 24 cans.

Mine eats probably 1/3 of a can a day, along with some grain free dry kibble. I think what helps is I use dry food for a hunt (putting a bit of kibble all around the house)/food puzzle/treat ball. Yours may need half a can day from what you say but that's still good value.

Making him work for his food made a big difference for us. I use a small bit of dry food for puzzles and hunts, but if your cat isn't into dry would you try a lickey mat? It slows my cat down so he's not still begging after the meal ends.

It was a really long road with ours, couldn't have visitors eat without paws in their food but I can now make a sandwich without any interest from overlord so hopefully it gets better for you!

Fifi00 · 14/05/2023 17:38

So a much better today had 30 minutes of play time with the fishing rod toy. Hes gone out to play. Also put 2 pouches in one meal instead of one . Minimal begging.

Thats good news OP. Lots of play followed by food. ..hopefully he's gone for a big snooze in the sun. Sounds wonderful 😻
