Stopping a cat from clawing carpets

I know this might be impossible but: we've just recently moved house to a place with more carpets, and the cat has decided that all he really wants to do is claw them up. He's only focused on one section, by a door, but he's really getting into it and causing proper damage to that section. Due to the layout of the house, it'll be impossible to keep him away from it without keeping him locked in one room overnight. He also does this early morning, which is screwing with our sleep.

So far, we're going to more vigilant about clipping his claws; spraying the area with citrus and lavender oils; and, as a temporary solution, putting a different piece of spare carpet over where he's clawing to see if he'll focus on that. But has anyone had any success in changing a cat's behaviour, or even just driving them away from a part of the house they want to attack?

I find when I keep her claws short, my cat seems to lose interest in clawing things. She is due for a (what is the claw equivalent of scalping).. whatever it is !

In my experience it's fecking impossible. Bloody furry bastards.

Clipping claws can make them scratch more as they try to re-sharpen their claws!

Do you have flat scratchers?

Can you put a coir mat down?

Thanks all. The cat won't use flat scratchers bc he's a contrary little bastard, but I'll pick up a coir mat tomorrow. I've also bought a massive new big vertical scratcher that hopefully he'll focus on too :(

I’d keep him locked in one room, you can’t win a battle of wills with a cat.

I put this on my stairs to protect my new stair carpet and it has 🤞 broken the habit PetIsay Anti Cat Scratch... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07RW7GKXJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I was surprised to find that the main wooden table leg shredder absolutely adores the cardboard chaise longue DP bought him for Christmas, but he will not touch carpet or normal flat scratchers.

The other one sticks to the one bit of carpet in the house. Literally. She has long fluffy toes and I suspect the only way she can get the sharp bits out far enough to shred anything is to press them into the carpet. I'm not brave enough to attempt to trim the toe fluff, though.
