Scabby ears?

I’m after some advice please…my cat has developed lots of little scabs on the back of his ears. I’ve tried doing a quick google but can’t find anything that looks similar.

He’s never had this before so I don’t know what this could be? Could anyone advise?

Thank you

My cat gets this every year as soon as the weather warms up. The first time I took her to the vets they asked if I had rabbits as these were a type of mite that rabbits get. I did have rabbits at the time but haven't for a few years now and she still gets them. I think they are harvest mites.

@steppingcarefully Thank you that’s really helpful.

Funny actually…we live out in the country & he’s caught/killed a couple of rabbits recently so it could be that then? I’m assuming I need to take him to the vet for treatment?

We recently lost one of ours to an aggressive skin cancer which started with scabs on the ear so I’d definitely get it checked out by a vet to be on the safe side.

My vet told me I could use frontline flea treatment to wipe over the ears and that will clear it but I never actually did as hers didn’t get that bad and she isn’t the sort of cat you can easily handle! it might be best to check it out with the vet.
