Cat chewing on claws/paws

My cat keeps chewing on the same part of his paw or claw. Looking closely it seems as though the sheath of skin at the bottom of two of his claws is loose rather than tight up against the claw like his other paw. His claws aren't loose and there is no wound or inflammation that I can see.
Anyone got advice? I would love to avoid an extra vet visit since he goes quite often due to other issues. (But I will take him if he needs it, of course!)

Are you sure it isn't a couple of stubborn claw sheaths that are trying to shed? They shed claw top layers like a snake sheds it's skin, so you can find what looks like little claws just lying about - more noticeable with indoor cats, as outdoor ones usually get rid on trees etc.. Google cat claw shedding and have a look at some of the images to see if it's that.

Hi @Allergictoironing, it might be that. I find claw sheaths around his scratching post quite often. He's been doing it for at least a week now though so I thought it might be something more sinister. I'll just keep an eye on it and will mention it to the vet at his next appointment for his other ailment.
Thanks for replying!

I remember watching a zoo program once where one of their snakes had a regular shedding problem, mainly round the eyes, and they would have to "help" otherwise the snake would be blinded by the extra layer over it's eyes.

Girlcat is always very good about doing her own pedicures, but I would sometimes have to give a very gentle "tug" at one of Boycat's claw sheaths.
