Today is this gorgeous guys 16th birthday. He was my wedding present 16 years ago. My marriage ended 5 years ago and whilst I moved out back into my family home. Felix stayed with my exH due to him being an indoor Cat, but I'd go down weekly to see him for a few hours. I finally got myself a flat in 2019 and in late 2020 Felix finally came back to live with me. He is the most snuggliest boy ever and loves nothing more than to lay snuggled up under my neck and absolutely loves food, although much to his disgust he doesn't get kitty treats anywhere near as much as he thinks he should.

Happy 16th birthday Felix

@Toddlerteaplease yes it is. If he was still eating properly and able to support his back end and not incontinent I maybe would've considered having the treatment done because even those extra 6 months together would be lovely as long as he wasn't suffering. I'm certainly going to miss that chunky little boy who always used to demand breakfast at daft o clock in the morning by climbing on top of my pillow and jabbing his claws in my head and face to wake me up. Sometimes I'd pull the duvet tight over my head and lay there whilst he tried to work out how to get his paw under it. You could almost hear the cogs ticking as he darted this way and that way before eventually laying on top of my face so I'd have no choice but to come out for some air and then of course feed him.

A sad update to this thread. Sadly Felix's health has declined rapidly over the last few weeks and blood tests show his kidneys are no longer working as they should. He had other health issues as well and will no longer eat anything. He's lost 3kg in a short space of time and his unable to support his back end for anything longer than a few seconds. His back leg has also ballooned up, at first I thought he'd hurt it when he slipped on my laminate floor but the Vet thinks it may be fluid in it. He's also urinary incontinent as well. So I've made the heartbreaking decision to have him pts tomorrow afternoon.

I'm so sorry. I'm sure he has had the best life with you and you are truly committing the last act of kindness you can for him.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

Shhhquirrel · 03/06/2023 01:14

So sorry to hear this, is there no treatment the vet can give for his kidneys which may help the water retention and incontinence. 16 isn’t very old. Wishing you both all the best.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 03/06/2023 09:15

@Shhhquirrel all they can do is put him on a drip for 48 hours to try and flush the toxins out of his kidneys, but it isn't guaranteed to work. If he was still eating and able to stand for more than a few seconds in his litter tray I would have maybe considered doing it, but he hasn't eaten properly in a few weeks and not eaten at all this last week aside licking some gravy off his food or having lick e lix sachets. That's how I knew something was wrong cos he always demanded 3-4 sachets a day and that was just for his breakfast. Of course he never got 3-4 sachets for his breakfast but he did get them spread throughout the day. At first when he went off his food I just thought he was being a fussy McGee and switched to a different brand. Then I wondered if he was maybe struggling to chew his food so switched him to pate and mousse type foods blended with a little water and he wolfed them down. He's also sleeping pretty much constantly now and isn't really interested in washing himself properly anymore either

Sorry to hear this, but I would try the drip before any other action. Give him the chance.

HoldingTheDoor · 03/06/2023 11:30

16 is elderly for a cat. Many make it to that age yes but it's still elderly.

Cats don't need to be given every chance, they need their welfare to be prioritised. They don't fear death as we do. And prioritising Felix' welfare is exactly what Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby is doing.

Surely. I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this with your beautiful boy. Flowers

Gettingbysomehow · 03/06/2023 15:08

He is absolutely perfect. I do love elderly cats 😃

I would not do this. He sounds like it's time.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 03/06/2023 18:28

He's gone 😭 it was so peaceful though and that's the way I wanted it to be. For the last few days I've dreaded coming back in from work and finding him gone. Today he struggled even more than he has been doing and his final day in the garden was spent pretty much just laying there. The only reason I'd have had the treatment done would have been for me but I'd be selfish and unkind to him prolonging his suffering just to ease mine slightly for maybe a few months if I was lucky. The Vet confirmed today putting him to sleep was the most kindest thing I could as his kidney had pretty much failed
