Worried about my old cat

I have an appointment at the vets this evening but wondered if anyone else has experienced this with their cat?

My 13yr old cat has recently demonstrated a weakness in his back legs. In the last 2 weeks, we have noticed that he is missing jumps and instead of doing one high jump, would chose to find new routes of smaller jumps to reach a destination. This seems to have got so much worse today and he struggled to get on the bed this morning. He is having to pull himself up using his front claws as he doesn’t seem to get enough power in his back legs when pushing off.

I know that he is old, but it feels very shocking as the vet always comments on how ‘young’ and healthy he is. Last yr the vet said he would think our cat is 4yrs old based on his health and mobility.

my childhood cat died suddenly at this age with back leg paralysis. It was a heart condition that came on suddenly and I’m terrified this could be it for our boy.

has anyone else experienced this? Do you have a positive story? I have been imagining the worst all day.

Hope all goes well at the Vet this evening, it's such a worry when something is wrong! Hopefully it's just a bit of arthritis and some supplements can help

Thank you @Bagpuss1200

Vet thinks arthritis so have a pain killer/anti inflammatory and we are going to see how he gets on. It seemed to come on so suddenly I was very worried that it was something sinister. The vet put my mind at ease though and I’m so relieved! 😀

So glad it's not what you were thinking. It's so worrying.
Hope he improves soon

Aww bless let's hope that helps him and he's feeling more comfortable today x

Harry had the same problem, although he was older than your boy. He had metacam and it made a huge difference to him - he still struggled a bit but nothing like he was. It really improved his quality of life.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. The vet gave an injection of Solensia and has recommended that he has this shot once a month to manage his pain. The vet said we would notice a difference in a few days but DH and I both think he’s moving quicker/easier this morning 😀very relieved!

My friend's cat has been having solensia injections since before Christmas and they have made a big difference to him. He's still wobbly but is no longer in pain. Harry had started on it for his arthritis but sadly we lost him to a suspected blood clot (he had heart failure) before we could see any improvement.
