Is there anything we can do to help our cat and next doors cat with their turf war?
We moved house 18 months ago. New house was empty for a while and rented before that, so didn't have any resident cats. Next door's cat is therefore adamant that our front and back gardens are pert of his territory. We were obviously expecting some teething trouble bringing our cat to a new area with resident cats where he'd have to navigate the local etiquette. There are so many fewer cats around in general than the area we moved from though, so we naively thought he'd be less stressed here once settled in.
But next door's cat is just not letting up. The fights in our garden are getting worse if anything - no sign of them working out any kind of 'time share' arrangement between the two of them. Our cat is 8 and has been allowed outdoors since being neutered at 6 months so it's not like we can just keep him in. We have a microchip cat flap so we don't get any intrusions indoors thankfully.
