My cat has a smelly bum!

I have noticed that when my cat (neutered male aged 1) is being happy and affectionate, he gets a really whiffy backside. I know this is probably his anal glands working overtime, and I've not seen anything to indicate a problem there (no soreness, licking, etc). But hoo boy does it pong! Once or twice he's left a tiny smear on the duvet cover, when he's been having fuss on the bed (yuk).

Has anyone else experienced this with their cat, and did they grow out of it? (She says hopefully.)

Yes, and no. They did not grow out of it.

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy argh no! So do/did they have niffy posterior permanently? What did you do (if anything)?

One of my cats does this if you are doing anything near his bum area e.g. brushing him or picking debris out of his fur. I call it skunking as it smells bad

It was intermittent. I didn’t do anything, he was a Bengal and had more intelligence than me.

I remember that happening with one of mine. He was neutered, but was still a frisky little blighter . It was his glands and he grew out of it. I don't recall if the vet cleared them out though🦨

No - females can do it too….if anything, they smell even worse.

I have a adult girl cat.

I was in bed.

She jumped on bed with arse near my face.

I used my hand to "sweep" her arse away from my face.

I must have made contact with the gland region as greasy poo squirt fired out into my face!!!

I've never been so disgusted. Shower at 2am. Will never get over it.

Moral of the story - don't touch gland region whilst their arsehole is near your face 😂 🤮

My female cat did this a few times, stroking her too enthusiastically about her rump.

Oh my god ! I didn't know cats did this, mine quite often sits on my lap with his bum near my face, I'll be moving him away in future.

@Igmum yours has the cute white whiskers! Mine had just one, but it fell out when he was still little and it's never grown back. He has a white bib and mankini though.

@cannaecookrisotto oh man, that's minging. The smear on the duvet was bad enough, I don't think I'd cope with a faceful!
