Smelly rescue cat - what to do

Morning.
Yesterday we brought home a gorgeous rescue cat. He's from a home that was hoarding cats, and then he's been with a Foster family with a bit of time in a crate for the last week or two.

He's lovely, though still quite nervous at the new situation and spending lots of time squeezed I've the sofa (even though he's massive!)

The issue is that he's quite smelly, I think from the hoarding house and crate and reeks of wee - and his fur feels dirty. I don't want to frighten him in these early days in the bath - is there anything else I can do?

Pic of the lovely stinky boy attached - he's a bit of a unit!!

Lovely boy, and how lovely he's found a good home!

The smell will fade quite quickly as he cleans himself, but if he's happy to be stroked then using pet wipes may help. If he's recently neutered his urine will lose its smell over the coming days too.
I'm sure it will go pretty quickly, I tame ferals and have never bathed one yet.

What a lovely boy! Poor thing, he's not realised yet how much he's landed on his paws.

I keep pet friendly wipes in for the odd occasion when my 2 long haired cats get themselves mucky. I got them from Pet at Home and they're unfragranced.

I suppose a damp flannel would do the same and might be nice and rough like a cats tongue.

I would say a little at a time, going at his pace.

Cheddar was a bit Pongy when I got her so I see some Pet head dry shampoo on her. Raspberry Lemonade flavour. Since her sister had a regular groom scheduled so I booked her in for a bath. However she is an exceptionally gentle and we'll behaved cat. Other owners may be risking their life or limbs.

Hi We rescued a homeless street cat, he absolutely stunk the day we got him, of wee and just dirt in general. He tried to keep himself clean, but living outside didn't help. We had him neutered 4 days later, and he's been fine ever since.
I didn't bath him, but kept him in for 5 weeks. Gradually he cleaned himself and is now the cleanest cat. He always smells sweet.
