Best litter to use for stinky cat

More 2yo boy is confined to home for the foreseeable (he isn't much of an outdoor cat and has always been in overnight so is fully litter trained) but doing all his business indoors means my bathroom now stinks of cat pee.

I use an enclosed tray, line with newspaper and use wooden pellet cat litter. Full change twice a week (little tray is boil washed in bath with washing up liquid). I clean out poo when it occurs and top up litter daily (take out the wettest litter and replace)

Is there a better tray or better litter or something I can line the tray with?

I am happy to do a full change more often but it is literally smelly at the end of each day. I can't afford [time or money wise] to change tray daily.

Any suggestions?

I use Intersand classic for my two indoor girls who share. As soon as the poo is buried there is no smell at all. My tray is in my kitchen. I scoop daily and full change monthly.

Intersand odourlock. £16 a bag but lasts a long time

I use Catsan non-clumping have done for years. Our female cat is old now and is weeing a lot and reluctant to go outside. I change it every 5 days or so and although it is wet it does not smell. Fortunately she still poos outside but whenever she hasn't they are scooped up and chucked straight away as cat poo honks so I don't know how it would cope with that.

You’ll always get a smell with wood pellets! Basically any of the clumping will be 10x better!

'Worlds best cat litter' (unscented). I use less and have to change it far less frequently so although it's expensive per bag it works out the same or cheaper and much less work.

forrestgreen · 10/03/2023 15:28

Use wood pellet system. With a sieve tray. The wee soaked powder falls underneath. The pellets on top trap the smell. The only smell is the wood smell. And you poo pick.

I use a puppy pad in the underneath tray, helps with changes. You only throw the powder away. It's saved me a fortune I last bought litter in July.

Intersand is a game-changer.

However, wood pellets shouldn't stink that much. It's almost certainly the newspaper that's the main problem as wee-soaked paper is bound to stink. Have you tried the pellets without paper under?

sunshinesupermum · 10/03/2023 16:01

World's best cat litter is brilliant. Never smells.

Crunchymum · 10/03/2023 16:20

Thank you everyone.

I have a few weeks worth of wood pellets left so I'll try those without the news paper.

Used the newspaper / wood pellets for 12 years with my older girl (adopted indoor so never toileted anywhere other than in her litter tray) and it never smelt of cats wee.

Poo is actually okay. I either scoop it immediately or of I'm not home the smell usually disappates itself. It's the stench of wee that

Sorry posted too soon.

It's the stench of wee that is the issue.

We use Ever Clean and that is basically what it is!

Brazilagogo · 10/03/2023 16:25

I had a cat who, in her older years, had eye wateringly smelly urine - probably from eating dried food only. I ended up using a very small amount of litter and emptying it out after every use. In her final couple of years, she went back to eating wet food and the smell improved - although her ability to reach the litter tray diminished 🥴

Another vote for Cats Best.

Jota67 · 10/03/2023 16:30

You definitely need clumping litter as then you scoop out the pre clumps twice a day.

I use Felight clumping litter 3.99 in BM .
I have 2 cats and zero smell

Pee clumps

We use Cats Best ( 2 adult M/F)

The male buries his pooh , it instantly kills the smell and dessicates the solid .
The female leaves hers sitting proudly on top of the littter .

If the pee smells strong are they drinking enough water ?

Vancat cat litter. (Vancat uk).
I have five (5) indoor cats. They can be very stinky without even trying. You just scoop out the poo and pee. It smells nice, absorbs excellently and tracks very little. You do not need to do a full empty and clean of the tray ever- provided you keep it topped up to the recommended depth.
Initially it seems very expensive, but for five full grown cats it works out at less than £8 per week.

This. It's amazing. I get the unscented one but I think they're all good. No smell at all from my indoor cats.
