Cat breathing fast

My little girl seems in fine health in all other respects. She’s an outdoor cat and had been happily running around the garden today. She had been under the vet for urinary issues but it seems to be under control now.

The problem is that she is breathing really fast. I only noticed this yesterday evening (after the vet had closed obviously). She’s sat with me right now, fast asleep and looking really comfortable but breathing like she’s purring.

Im going to call the vet tomorrow but should this be a case for the emergency vet?

Just to update if anyone was interested, we went back in on Saturday (thankfully she is insured through the roof and the vets is in the next street), they had a look and and performed an ultrasound. She has fluid in her lungs and blood pooling in her heart. She’s back in next Saturday for another check up but it’s not looking good.

So sorry OP. You are doing everything you could though.

Oh I'm sorry.

how is she in other ways, does she seem sad or is she okay?

FlowerArranger · 06/03/2023 23:14

I'm so sorry. @PriamFarrl .
I can imagine how devastated you must be.
What is the vet suggesting?
I think it may time, sadly.

So sorry, it’s heartbreaking. 💐

They can give medication that improves the contractility of the heart, that will help prevent blood pooling and clotting.

PriamFarrl · 07/03/2023 13:06

She’s rather out of sorts to be fair. Ideally I’m hoping she lasts until Easter when we are both off work for a while. I do think we might need to make a choice before then though.

It does sound like it’s time, especially if she’s out of sorts. Cats mask really well, we only see signs when they’re really not well.

Im sorry you’re going through this.

Bless you for thinking of her.

She seemed so much better today, it was really sunny here and we are blessed with a south facing garden. She did a lot of lying in the sun which really seemed to up her mood.

The vet we saw seemed more positive. She upped her dose of the diuretic medication as her breathing is still fast. She said that yes she could have a heart attack at any moment she could last 6 months or so. As things stand at the moment they want to see her back in 2 weeks.

@PriamFarrl I'm glad she got to enjoy some sun.
Cherish every little head nuzzle and meow :-)

Do you reckon she's in pain?

I don’t know. She’s not sleeping as soundly as she has done. She’s been sleeping with me the last few nights. When she was with me before she was ill I’d wake up in the night and be convinced she had died as she was sleeping so soundly that I couldn’t feel her breathe or move. Now whenever I wake up she’s already half awake.

Been thinking of your beautiful girl. Hope you're still enjoying cuddles and purrs.

PriamFarrl · 04/04/2023 16:44

Just to update anyone who was interested, she took a turn for the worse today and we had to make the decision that no one want to. She was the most beautiful girl and so loved.
