Kitten being a bully!

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 08:46

My lovely old boy is being bullied by our 6 month old kitten.
Old boy is 9.

We have another older boy who smacked the kitten once and is no longer bothered at all.
The kitten has been neutered, but it hasn't stopped the bullying. He flings himself at the older cat. Lots of hissing but he never hurts the kitten.
He is twice the size and probably 3 times the weight....he's a chunky boy.

Is there anything to be done?
I favour old boy when the kitten is in. Hiss at him when he attacks the older cat. And he listens to me. But as soon as I take my eye off him, kitten strikes.

Is it hooligan teenage behaviour?
He isn't being nasty, he wants to play. But old boy has absolutely no interest.
I don't want to lose my older cat because of this tiny git cat!!

Any advice welcome.

Have you tried a Feliway plug in?

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 18/02/2023 08:48

How often do you play with kitten?

Xmasbaby11 · 18/02/2023 08:49

We have this with our kitten and 6yo cat. Feliway made no difference, in fact the room this is plugged in is the one they spend most of their time fighting in!

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 08:49

He is played with constantly. 3 older children that love him!

I haven't tried feliway. Good idea. It stopped a previous cat attacking exh legs... 😅

Is 9 really an "old boy"?

Our DCat will be 9 this year and I think of her as middle aged. Is she actually older than I thought?

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 09:04

Well old compared to 6 months. And he is a grump,so seems old to me!
My previous old boy had 16 years... So maybe I should say middle aged boy!

This is why it’s always a good idea to get kittens in pairs!

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 09:13

I did consider it.
But his family are very close by. I thought that he would play with them as he was let out. Unfortunately his mother just slaps him and his brothers are scared of him.
He is a lovely boy, with too much confidence!

What a sweetie - as if butter wouldn't melt!

caringcarer · 18/02/2023 09:24

The answer might be to get another around the same age who wants to play. He looks a lovely little kitty.

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 09:40

You lot are not a good influence!!
Become a 4 cat family... Then mad cat woman when the kids go...

But as he flings himself about...
It's an idea.

We have the opposite, our 8 year old female beats up our ex feral juvenile cat 😢 - to be fair this last year we've got two kittens and a puppy and this has turned her works upside down somewhat so I have sone sympathy but she gets a telling off
You could try water spray the kitten when it's been naughty to the older cat

Sunriseinwonderland · 18/02/2023 09:47

My kitten is very naughty too but luckily the 12 year old cat knows how to defend herself and keeps the kitten in line 😂

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 10:15

@cuscustardbear that is what I was worried about. Both the older cats have been aggressive against interlopers in the garden.

Chunky older boy just won't put his claws out against the kitten.

Does your older cat show any signs of distress? If not, perhaps he does not feel bullied and is happy dealing with the kitten in his own way.

Your older cat sounds lovely BTW and YABVVVU not to include a picture of him.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 18/02/2023 12:41

I think I'd designate Older Boy's preferred napping room as a safe place...No Kittens Allowed.

Pouffeycat · 18/02/2023 19:49

Ha. Here he is doing the walk of death. It's a very long drop on the other side of that fence!
