Weird cry

One of my cats who is approx 17 has started doing this weird loud cry which sounds like a child. It goes on for about 15 seconds then tails off to a quiet cry. She'll run about and then sits at the top of the stairs shouting. She's very active for her age and eats well. Apart from looking a bit thin and I think she may have lost hearing a bit, she seems okay. It's been going on for a while but is getting more frequent. Any thoughts?

Maybe she’s getting a little disoriented and so crying out?
There is a cat meow translator app. I’ve never tried it but I was reading about it recently and reports are it has some accuracy, maybe that’s worth a go?

It can be a sign of the start of dementia, however it's a recognised symptom of thyroid and kidney illness. It can also start if they have some degree of sight or hearing impairment.

Boycat, formerly a very quiet cat, has found his inner oriental voice since developing CKD and will make loads of different noises, often a sort of yowl that goed on for a few minutes then stops.

Thanks for the replies and the link. I did wonder about dementia as she seems to be confused at times.

Both of mine do it occasionally, I think a couple of times there has been another cat in the garden. The other times I swear it's for attention!
