New kitten anxiety

Morning all

Some or you may remember I lost my beautiful 11 month old girl suddenly just over a week ago.

I wasn’t really ready, but my children were so sad and wanted to get a new kitten so we are on the wait list for rescues and picked this lovely girl up yesterday.

I don’t know if I’m just anxious after what happened but there are a few things that are worrying me.

She slept all night last night. 8pm until 7.30am this morning, she was in my room all night but didn’t wake up.

She hasn’t pooed since we bought her home at 2pm. She has wee’d in her litter tray.

She is meowing loudly occasionally - is she just calling for her mum do you think?

She has eaten a little, yesterday evening and this morning.

God this is horrible. She has her first vet check next Friday alongside her vaccinations and flea/worming but it seems like a long way away!

This is Willow, her name means “new life”

Good morning,

First of all, I am so very sorry for your loss. I cannot even imagine what you are going through. xxx I lost my baby girl last year at 17 weeks gestation and I have only recently started to recover.

We brought our kitty home two years ago, when he was 10 weeks old at the time. The first couple of days he didn't eat or had a poo either. I think he needed time to adjust to the new environment.
My advice is to be patient, give her time and make sure you give her the exact same food that she's used to (same brand, same flavour).
Hope it all goes well for you and your family xxx

@Katpax thank you so much for your kind words and I’m sorry you went through similar.

Make sure she has somewhere safe to hide, don’t let the children harass her. Wait for her to come to you, maybe a few things for her to chase when she’s feeling playful. Water, food and litter tray kept well apart. Keep litter tray clean.
Honestly, in two weeks time you will wonder what you were fussing about.

She is beautiful.
It's a big change for her and will take a while to adapt.
I think it's natural to feel anxious, especially if you sadly lost one. My young kitten died at the vets after a spay operation it was an awful shock.
I have since got two more as her brother seemed lost, and it's worked out really well, three of them get on like a house on fire, lovely to see them play and interact as they do, they entertain themselves.
I personally think two kittens settle better than one in its own, but she will definitely come round.

LittleLillie · 21/01/2023 09:53

Thank you both.

My children are young teens so they’re giving her plenty of space, walking quietly and taking the lead from her.

Shes played a little this morning and has gone back to sleep.

@SpentDandelion Im sorry to hear about your kitten, that’s really sad x

Oh and I did want two, but she was the last one available. If I don’t have any luck with rescues I will look into getting another in a few weeks I think.

Hi OP.
It's entirely understandable that you feel anxious, so sorry to hear about your little one. I remember your post, and felt sad for you. It is devastating.
Your new little girl is gorgeous, and she looks so much like my boy.
She will feel a bit subdued for a while
My cat hid under the table for a week so i made his bed under there and just sat on the floor near him .
Good luck, she will be fine

Thus is my big lad, 5.5kg.
Good luck with Willow, lovely name.

We got 10 week old kittens 12 months ago after our previous, very elderly cats died. I'd forgotten how much little kittens sleep! All they did for about a month was eat, sleep and play a bit. Like toddlers.

LittleLillie · 21/01/2023 12:43

Thank you @Clarich007 Flowers. What a beautiful boy!

@moggerhanger she has woken up and been very playful so I think I’m just over anxious, they are very much like babies at first aren’t they!

I remember Lily waking me up several times a night those first few weeks, it was like having a newborn so when I woke up this morning and Willow was still curled up beside me sleeping I panicked. Sounds so silly doesn’t it.

She has purred this morning too Smile

Oh, Willow is lovely.

I'm sure she's just finding her feet, OP, and she'll soon be ruling the household with a paw of iron.

moggerhanger · 21/01/2023 15:42

@LittleLillie purry kittens are just the best! Such a loud noise for such a small critter.
