I think my cat has a cold, do I need to be concerned?

We got two cats from a rescue in early December. I know they had cat flu in the rescue at the time.

in the last week or so, one of the cats has been coughing sneezing and has a runny nose. Otherwise seems fine and well.

Could he have cat flu from the rescue that’s taken this long to present? Or an allergy to something in our house that didn’t show up for the first few weeks? Does this warrant a trip to the vet?

I would go to the vet. Cat flu can be quite serious

Yes it’s a vet trip, cats don’t get colds they get cat flu.

Poor thing must feel rotten.

Could be an upper respiratory infection rather than cat flu.

My cat had one recently and needed a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatories.

He’s going to the vet tomorrow morning - he seemed to be a bit better over the weekend but today he’s really sniffly and has sneezed green snot all over me.

My son's cat is an indoor one for this very reason. He still occasionally gets snotty but much less now. He needs an occasional nebuliser, where he's put in his carrier, a towel over the top with the vapour going directly under the towel.

So, to answer your question, he needs to see the vet as cat flu can stick around.

Cats often get secondary bacterial infections when they come down with a virus, so your vet may want to give antibiotics.

We’ve got antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory and some other supplement that’s supposed to help with flu. He’s been swabbed to ID what the cause is. Poor thing is much worse today than he has been, he previously seemed well in himself but he’s looking a sorry state today.
