Bitey scratchy kitten-any tips?!

We have just got 2 kittens-they are gorgeous (will add a photo later!) but one has started being a bit of a menace and attacking people! I know he’s just doing kitten playing, but he will fling himself at me and bite/scratch really hard. I say ouch firmly (have been reading a bit about things to try) and put him down, but he then attacks my feet-scrambles up my jeans (ouch!) and wants to do it again-it really hurts! He has lots of toys and we are playing with him with them, but I wondered if here was anything else to try?

Sounds like a normal kitten to me Grin

Do they have scratching posts and lots of towers etc. to explore?

😂

Yes, I’m guessing so. I just don’t recall our others being quite so vicious! We have a cat tower and scratching post. Was wondering about a tunnel thing he could launch himself through as well?!

I think some are worse than others tbh!

Ours loved anything that wasn't meant for them - the lids of milk bottles, hair elastics (supervised so they didn't swallow anything), cable ties, rolled up balls of paper, table tennis balls etc.

Make a noise like a pissed-off cat - yowl or hiss - whenever the kitten hurts you.

RandomMess · 08/01/2023 16:06

Are you trimming his claws?

Be grateful it's Jean wearing season!

Pixiedust1234 · 08/01/2023 16:10

You say you play with him but how? Are you using hands and feet as part of play? Some cats are aware where toys and body meet and are careful, others can only play using toys attached to playwands or light or foilballs so they don't associate parts of your body as being a toy.

Get 2 tunnels and a pop up cube, plus lots of wand toys. Ping pong balls are always good too.

Mine all adore the spring toys and pipe cleaners

Jaxhog · 08/01/2023 16:44

Ours was a biter but loved his Panic Mouse when he was a kitten, and would play with it for hours. He still loves his replacement Panic Mouse (it eventually packed up) now that he's 15! The Panic Mouse is a battery-operated wand that wiggles randomly.

Kittens need a distraction.

Jaxhog · 08/01/2023 16:46

The other toy I'd recommend is Da Bird, although it requires a human to operate it.

Oh my God, adorable. He or she regrets nothing.

He’ll calm down once he’s been neutered. This is his teenage hooligan phase 😬

Learn cat language: hiss or yowl at him whenever he’s being mean. He may just be trying to play with you though, male cats have incrediblly tough skin, plus the added protection of fur, and they just don’t understand how fragile our skin is.

Maybe get some bits of string or cat toys and encourage him to attack those instead.

Orangesare · 08/01/2023 17:31

Ours used to attack our feet when we were sat at the table eating.
she did grow out of it. However if she gets in a bedroom with a sleeping human she does have a bit of go still. So she has to spend her nights in the garage (with the heating boiler)

My twelve year old boy is still a bitey bastard.
We're waiting for him to grow out of it 🤣

Erm @Redlocks30 where are the mandatory photos? I expect them to be added immediately. Over 3hrs 15min is not “shortly”

(semi joking before you all shout at me! But I do expect pics!)

Lots of toys, change them daily. Remove your hands every time they get bitey. Wand toys are your friend.
I used to build a play den/climbing area every day to amuse mine (and wear them out a bit) chairs, boxes, tunnels, bits of crumpled paper, couple of throws.
Kittens thrive on variety and stimulation. Despite this I was covered in scratches and scabs for the first few months. They do grow out of it.
