New kitten a big mistake?

We got a new kitten the week before Christmas and our old cat is just not having it. We did scent swapping, feliway, slow intro with lots of treats for both. The older cat keeps attacking the kitten at least a few times a day. So she hasn't hurt him but he's terrified and screaming. I wonder if this simply isn't going to work?

How do you suggest I distract gently? She's not interested in anything else. I could use food but then wouldn't I be reinforcing the hunting behaviour? Hunt the kitten = get a treat?

Try hissing at her. We stopped a couple of really bad habits this way - it does work.

Thank you all for your help. I've been hissing at our older cat and removing her every time she tackles and pins the kitten. Today seemed better so maybe she's getting the point. Here's a pic of the offender and her victim!

@2FelisCatus, thank you for the update! I was wondering about this today. That's a very impressive climbing frame. It gives the kitten a place to be safe; he can knock the cat off if she tries to get to his level!

Our old cat isn't interested in the tree. It's not quite sturdy enough for her so the kitten has it to hide on. She sleeps in the top basket most of the time. It also lets her be in the kitchen without being tackled by old cat or ferried about by children!

@2FelisCatus, it sounds like a perfect solution. So does the hissing! There's no mistaking what that means. Good on you for making the effort.
