I've a hard shell cat carrier that goes up to his weight (7kg)

But this unwieldy beast plus the weighty cat is too much.

Has anyone with a big cat tried one of those backpack things?

I tried a soft shell thing when he was a kitten but it wasn't substantial

I've got a picnic basket style carrier. By curver. It's top entry and really robust.

If it’s for the vets - a carrier that comes apart completely is essential! We often struggle to get cats out of some carriers and it causes the cats real stress! Back back carriers don’t really give the cat enough space. The solid one you have sounds like the best option for the cat despite being awkward to carry

Get a metalcote or similar carrier. They are so much better than the usual plastic ones, and I would not trust a fabric one at all. Definitely not a backpack carrier, friend's cat had torrential diarrhoea while she was using one...
