Pregnant stray kitten

Hello all,

After some advice.

I have 2 indoor 1 year old male cats. Neutered and up to date with everything.

I have noticed a young cat in our garden the last week several times. Today she was ripping open bin bags and I put my hand out to her and she ran over when I noticed she was quite heavily pregnant. I would hazard a guess at her being around 6 months old based on the size my cats were. She seems young still.

I took some photos and put on local Facebook group with no luck. She appeared twice more (I smoke so go outside for that, she appeared each time I went out).

After some urging from the Facebook group I have taken her in and placed her in my secure utility room with bedding, cardboard box with sheets and towels and hot water bottle, food and drink (which she wolfed down), litter tray, some toys and a little night light. She is not trying to escape. She is very friendly which makes me question if she is a stray but with her being so young and pregnant I don't want to leave her out.

I am not sure I am doing thr right thing. She doesn't have to have any contact with my cats due to lay out of house. She is loving some strokes. My plan is to look after her till boxing day when I can get her to be scanned for a microchip but I am not hopeful baring in mind so young and pregnant and then hopefully a shelter. Some shelters have been tagged in my post so hopefully they may be in touch beforehand.

Any advice? Am I doing the right thing keeping her in? Anything I should be doing for her that I am not. I feel bad for her locked in a room with no company while my two spoilt boys are in the house.

She's safe, fed, warm and comfortable. You ARE doing the right thing. I hope it all goes well x

CatJumperTwat · 25/12/2022 11:24

You're absolutely doing the right thing. Even if she has a home they are clearly not responsible owners and shouldn't have her.

I adopted a cat who had been found with her five kittens in someone's garden. She was still a kitten herself. We're her forever home and she's so happy and sweet.

What a sweet Christmas story. She sounds like a lovely wee thing and your family too for looking after her ❤️

They reckon she is 6-8 months old and 6 weeks pregnant. No microchip. Asked us to keep her while they try and find somewhere for her. They said the utility room is fine to keep her as even if they had space to take her themselves she would be in a small cattery outdoor but she has 15 cats at the moment. One is going next week. Ideally she wants a Foster home for her. Her husband will bring her to vets on Wednesday to check on kittens and give her a proper check over. They run the rescue just the two of them from home, but have a network of fosterers and stuff they work with.

Thank goodness for lovely people like you OP.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/12/2022 20:42

You’ve got to name her Mary.

Well done, a kindness for a vulnerable animal in need.

why don’t I ever have kittens or pregnant cats turn up on my doorstep….?

You know what....23 years ago today my cat went missing. She was an indoor cat and ran out on my grandads blindside and we never saw her again. I was 11 and absolutely heartbroken. Coincidence that this has happened on Christmas day same as when she went missing! I took her for a cuddle on the sofa...she was comfy and I could feel the kittens moving around! I need to not get attached to her! She is tucked back in her safe space now.

TwoMonthsOff · 25/12/2022 22:39

she is a beautiful little cat, so happy she found you

eurochick · 25/12/2022 22:52

She's lovely. I'm glad she is no longer outside ripping open bin bags for food!

EachandEveryone · 25/12/2022 22:58

You know you have to keep
her til she delivers don’t you? I mean, you may as well now. The children will help, your husband will help. I’m just here for the photos 😀

userxx · 25/12/2022 23:01

You HAVE to keep her, look at her face, she ADORES you 💜

daschundthroughthesnow · 25/12/2022 23:11

Oh OP, what a lovely thing you have done. This has warmed my heart!!!

Sophiste · 26/12/2022 01:00

Cuddles on the sofa - that pic is almost unbearably sweet. She looks so thankful and relieved to have found shelter and comfort with you, OP. My favourite thread of this Christmas.

“Not get attached” - good luck with that!

NewBootsAndRanty · 26/12/2022 01:07

Oh that second picture! I think I have something in my eye..

Agree, she must be called Mary. Well done OP for taking her in and seeking appropriate help

caringcarer · 26/12/2022 02:04

Impossible not to get attached to her. Shelter will find homes for her kittens for you. Do keep her. Pregnant cats are always starving.

Summer2424 · 26/12/2022 03:09

@00deed1988 you have done such a kind thing, we need more people like you in the world!

sashh · 26/12/2022 03:40

How is Mary this morning?

Namaste6 · 26/12/2022 04:27

What a truly lovely thing you've done OP. That second photo! 💕. What you said about needing to not get attached - I think it's maybe too late for that! She needs you and is so grateful that you're there. Her face!

This is such a lovely story. Please keep us updated won't you.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 26/12/2022 04:46

You are an angel OP. You've changed her whole world.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2022 08:45

Aww please keep her!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/12/2022 09:09

Mary looks like she’s found her new home, she loves you.

00deed1988 · 26/12/2022 09:17

Morning. She is very happy this morning. Wolfed down her food, I went in to sit with her for a while and she just climbed up on my lap for snuggles. My husband is pretty much on board with keeping her if I say the word...This time last November it was a struggle for him to agree ti 1 cat...I had to convince him to get 2 so they would be company for each other....now this was much easier than I thought! only problem is we are due to go away in 4 weeks for 4 nights. Going to have a chat with the rescue lady and see if we do agree to Foster her and kittens long term can they come here to feed and check on her as they are less than 5 mins away. That's the only thing holding me back. Seems selfish but my husband and I have never been away just the 2 of us in 11 years and this was my Christmas surprise to him.

Our boys are very curious. She isn't too bothered. Wants nothing to do with them but also not stressed by them. Also a good sign. That's something else I was worried about!
