Cat wont go OUT the cat flap....

We have an eight month old kitten, and an older one. Kitten loves going outside and will come in the cat flap... but he wont go out of it! He sits next to it and watches our other cat go out. I want him to go out of it, I'm not always home to let him out, and I want him to toilet outside so I can get rid of the litter tray. He does toilet outside when he is out there. Should I put the litter tray outside and see if that tempts him out of the cat flap?? I do shove him through it sometimes but he doesn't use it himself 🤔

For a long time my latest rescue would only go out of a window and in the flap Confused

We just left a window open...

You should still have a litter tray even for outside cats though. Sometimes the weather's nasty that they really don't want to go out.

You shouldn't force him to toilet outside if he doesn't want to. Lots of cats don't feel safe being that vulnerable unless they're indoors.

Have you shoved him through a few times?

My juvenile kitten/cat is the same ... he watches his brother go out and just stares at it ... he's a bit dippy - we call him Odie (Garfield's dog) because he's so dippy 🤪

Yes... every day. He toilets out there all the time when we put him out. I'll give it time... hopefully he'll start using it.

Hhmm I may try this, my cats would sell their soul for a handful of dreamies 😋

I had a new cat flap put in yesterday and spent an hour posting my kitten in and out with treats and play to make it fun. She soon got the hang of it and the same day was going in and out on her own.

Tilllly · 22/12/2022 13:07

Our eldest was same

We left the door ajar and bundled her thru the cat flap - she'd use the cat flap then, so long as the door was open too

Weird but after a few days she'd use the cat flap ok

Lallybroch · 22/12/2022 13:11

My 10 year old cat will happily use the cat flap (in the dining room door) unless you are in the kitchen, then she will sit quietly by the kitchen door waiting for you to open in for her - the rooms are next door to each other with an open archway!

Clarich007 · 03/01/2023 15:15

My problem exactly. My cat will always use it to come in not a problem, but he screams like a baby if you gently try to suggest he use it to go out. He sits looking sadly at the door handle. Why, just why?? 😍

Best cat mun
"Posting my kitten" 😻😂😁

My kitten and elderly cat were having none of it. I had to shove them both in and out around 100 times and feed them treats now they both go in and out.
They can do it - they are just being dickheads.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 04/01/2023 12:31

Can you wedge it open and leave it open for a few hours, see if he goes through it?

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 04/01/2023 12:41

I think it's something to do with the ground level. It's harder for them to go through if the ground is lower on the other side.

We have 2 catflaps. One from the house to the garage and one from the garage to outside. Exactly the same flaps but the garage to outside one is the same level on both sides and my cat goes through no problem. She hates going through the other from higher up house to garage but will happily go from garage to house.
