No cat flap - what to do

So we recently moved into a new home and there is no cat flap. Our cat generally likes to stay in and sleep during the day and go out at night from 8pm in and out as he pleases.

We currently leave the kitchen window open all night for him which hasn't been a problem whilst it's been slightly warmer but now it's cold (-3 this morning) its making the house unbearably cold in the mornings. Which I can deal with but I have a 2 year old too so not really ideal.

Any suggestions on what we can do prior to getting a cat flap installed (it has to go through the wall as the glass isn't suitable for a flap)

So far our options are

  • leave the window open all night and move the cat bed into the kitchen and close the kitchen door but would the cat get cold?
  • close the window when we go to bed at night as he's usually been out by then (then he's likely to meow loudly until I get up and open it again)
  • shut the cat out at night. Obviously not what I want to do as that's a bit mean!

WWYD?

We also don't have a cat flap. We have a litter tray which he never uses unless he is ill (even then he doesn't always). He just asks to go in and out, and we make sure he is in at night. Seems to work fine apart from when he is being indecisive and changes his mind about where he wants to be!

No flap here - we have a utility between the kitchen and back door so it would mean two flaps or leaving the middle door open. Our cat is always in overnight. We have two trays but I can’t remember when she last used one. She tends to go out after breakfast, then is in until about 10pm at this time of year. (In warmer weather she would happily live in the garden.)
