Scratching the carpet

He's driving us nuts, several scratching posts both horizontal and vertical different textures plenty to choose from. Bloody cat goes next to any of them and instead of utilising the post/board etc he scratches the carpet right next to it. He's ruining the carpets. His sister manages to use the posts why can't he?

Have you tried catnip on the scratchers?

Yes, tried everything it's been going on for years he's 13 now and still gives us the finger every time he scratches.

Cats are arseholes.
Catnip on scratchers is a good idea.
Mine love a curved scratcher too. Does he have a 'favourite' step? You can get hinged scratchers that could protect the carpet.

He's perfectly capable of lying on one of them, but becomes possessed and goes into a carpet scratching trance. God job we adore him. Git.

I heard Vicks VaporRub works if you are happy to put a small amount on the actual carpet. My cat was scratching an upholstered chair and I put a tiny amount on the fabric and she stopped scratching it straight away and hasn’t scratched it after several weeks.

I'd have to do the whole house, he doesn't discriminate. Stairs, hallway, lounge, bedroom any room that has carpet. Perhaps I should be grateful he doesn't shred the furniture 🙄

Are you sure the posts are tall enough? Most aren’t and cats like to stretch up fully

Cover the scratchers with carpet.

That's what we had to do with our sofas 🙄
