What do you wish you'd asked...?

Morning. I posted yesterday about making a choice about which cat/cats to adopt. We had a really low maintenance black rescue cat for years and had her PTS a couple of months ago. I'm talking to a couple of rescues about another black cat and a mother tabby and her female tortoiseshell kitten who would come as a pair. I realise when we rescued our last cat we asked few questions and got very lucky in terms of behaviour and how relaxed she became with us. I over-think a lot. What are the questions I should be asking of the rescue charities (all of the cats would be vaccinated and spayed) or what are the questions you wish you'd asked before you brought a new cat/kitten home? Thank you for any advice.

Don't think I had any questions! I took them as they were and got on with it!

Thanks for responding.

I’ve had a couple of cats, mostly dogs but I wish I’d asked a calm creature, rather than a hell raiser😂

Almostalwayshappy · 19/11/2022 18:59

@suzi888 Thank you - I'll keep that in mind!

We never asked questions either.

All our cats were rather spontaneous additions to the family and we've never had any issues!

I think it's worth asking if they have any diet issues, and how they feel about other cats, assuming the cat is going to go outside and there are other cats in the vicinity. Otherwise I don't think I asked anything.

I wish I'd got two kittens rather than one. I thought older cat would never forgive me for two, but actually the younger one probably would have pestered her less if he'd had a playmate his own age. He was an absolute menace - literally climbed me, repeatedly.

It all worked out eventually though. He's twice her size now at 2 years old, but she happily pins him down and washes him...

I never asked any questions either!
I saw his photo and loved him right away.
The rescue centre described him as "slightly nippy"
That actually meant "very bitey"
I wouldn't change him for the world (and he's calmed down lots)

As pp say it is hard to ask questions about a cat as they dont seem to let you know who they are until you have owed them for a while .
but I would ask ;
Are they litter trained / what brand of litter are they on
Can i take some used litter home with them so i can put their smell in the new litter tray .
Are they indoor or out door types
Any knowledge of their hunting or lack there of skills
What food are they curranty eating
Do they prefer wet or dry food
Are they use to other cats / dogs / kids , even if you dont have any it will give you a idea of their temperament

There is probably more questions but that is all I can think of right now

Hello - I just wanted to say thank you for your support re adopting a rescue cat. Tippy has been with us for a week. She is slowly starting to come out of her shell and we love her already.

What do you wish you'd asked...?

Whether she was a hunter or not 🤮🤮🤮

KylieKangaroo · 18/12/2022 22:00

Ah she is lovely!

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/12/2022 16:53

Aww, she is a little stunner!

Humans tend to mould to the cat rather than vice versa dont we? no point trying to get a cat to change.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/12/2022 20:40

She's got you under the paw!

silentpool · 19/12/2022 20:42

Black cats are the best 😍😍

Ellmau · 20/12/2022 08:13

She's beautiful!

catandcoffee · 20/12/2022 19:51

Tippy is a born poser.
God black cats are so regal looking..... she's gorgeous

Almostalwayshappy · 20/12/2022 20:50

Thank you everyone - she really is adorable. She pats my hand when she wants a stroke and looks into my eyes really curiously. She will do well here I think and, after losing our old black rescue a couple of months ago, is making us smile again.

What do you wish you'd asked...?
wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 20/12/2022 22:53

She's a be

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 20/12/2022 22:53

Ah bollox... pressed too soon... she's a beauty.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 20/12/2022 22:57

I would ask so about how the cat likes to be handled.

Our beloved tabby rescue lived to 20. She hated being handled. She clearly only tolerated our handling at the rescue centre as she wanted to be rescued ( such tiny cages ..looking at you RSPCA)

VioletLemon · 20/12/2022 22:57

I got 2 littermates who get on aswell as preying on each other. They are great together. 9 now.
