Litter Recommendations Please

Hi All.
DCat was seriously and randomly ill last week - we’re still not 100% sure of the cause - but she had awful D&V and refused to eat or drink. Thankfully with some vet intervention and TLC she seems to have recovered but has developed a serious aversion to her litter trays and keeps toileting on soft furnishings, presumably because she associates the trays with being ill and in pain.

This happened once before - not after illness. It transpired that she was trying to eat her corn based litter (we do feed her, she is just greedy and not the brightest!) and so switching to Catsan solved that. I’m hoping changing litter type again might help.
If anyone has any recommendations for non-natural (eg non-edible, to her) litter that is fairly gentle on paws I’d be very grateful. Very happy to hear any other advice too - we love her dearly but this isn’t pleasant!

Mine gets wood pellets, which contain smell better.

Thanks @silentpool, are the wood pellets ok on paws? She didn't seem fussy before, but given she prefers towels atm I thought I'd try and get something soft-ish/fairly fine.

The wood pellets can be a bit hard on paws initially, as they are hard compressed pellets. They break down into sawdust once they have got damp, so they may well suit if you spray them initially with a fine mist of water before putting them in the tray.

One waring is that they do track about the house!

Ours all love the wood pellets too and they smell better than most.

(The pellets, not the cats 😁)

Agree with this.

I clear out any poos and wet patches a couple of times a day and bag these up in a bin kept just for this purpose. Went to do the rubbish the other night and when I opened the poo bin it actually smelt of pine rather than poo/wee!

Thank you so much all. Will give these a go.

How about puppy pads in a tray? Not ideal but doesn't involve litter at all, and better than the furniture.

We use Natusan which I thought was expensive but one bag lasts our two cats well over a month as doesn't need fully changing each time. Doesn't get smelly either. There's 50% off first bag at the moment on their website or if you want to use the link below you'll get a 10L bag for a fiver and I get 40% off my next order.

We have just bought Ever Clean after a recommendation on here the only problem is she loves it too much and is now rolling round in it gleefully!

TheHallouminati · 09/11/2022 18:51

I switched from pine to Felipur since getting another cat. The pine one just wasn't cutting it with two cats using it.
It seems more expensive on the surface but isn't in reality because it's such a good clumping litter that you rarely need to change the whole tray.
Wees turn into rocks and poos dry out. Smell is covered wonderfully especially if you use scented. We'd always know when one of ours did a poo before esp with DH working from home in open plan house. Now you have to properly examine the tray to see whether they've gone or not.
It's quite a fine litter so softer on paws and easy for them to cover.

Just checked back in and saw the updates - thanks all so much.

@tootsierubs I've used your link thank you, &@amylou8 puppy pads are the next step if that doesn't work!

I use intersand classic. I was given a free sample of some Tofu litter. It was a nightmare. Tracked everywhere, and had two dirty protests until it was removed.
