Harry, poorly boy

Last Saturday we had to take Harry to the vet as he was having problems breathing. They did a chest X-ray and found fluid on his chest so he was kept in after it was drained. He was back on Thursday for a heart scan and sadly the vet found he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and has heart failure.

The good news is the meds have stabilised him and he’s actually back to normal, but we’re still waiting for lab results for the fluid as there was some blood in it. Apparently he would be unlucky to have a tumour and HCM but needless to say I’m worried.

He’s currently on a diuretic and a heart tablet and he’s starting an anticoagulant next week. So far he’s happy to take them in a small portion of Hills A/D so long may that continue! We did try syringing the diuretic into his mouth but found out he can spit like a camel and I now know it makes a good hair gel!

I’m just keeping my fingers crossed we can keep him well for a while longer. He may be 17.5 but I’m not ready to say goodbye yet

He is gorgeous. What a beautiful boy.

We had some good news yesterday - the lab results came back and Harry hasn't got cancer. There's no sign of infection either so it's a case of hopefully managing his heart disease with medication and hoping it doesn't affect his kidneys too badly.

Phew, at least that's 2 fewer things to worry about. Obviously in the grand scheme of things he still has HCM but that's usually manageable and I gather isn't a particularly uncomfortable condition, certainly compared to cancer or infection.

Hugs for you, and head scritches for Harry.

It's been a pretty crappy last few months so it made a change to get some good news.

Apart from his breathing episode he's been fine in himself. He's loving the Hills A/D and long may that continue as it means we can get his meds down him. There is a potential issue in that the heart meds could make his kidneys worse but obviously his heart takes priority. We're keeping an eye on him and enjoying him while he's here

Harry is so bloody cute. I love his little face. Such lovely markings. I have an elderly boy with various issues too and it's a constant worry and a lot of stress at times but I love him so much and he makes life worth living.

Wishing you and gorgeous Harry all the very best

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/11/2022 13:52

All the very best Harry darling.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/11/2022 09:35

How is Harry doing? Is he still ok with his special diet?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/11/2022 10:35

He seems to be back to how he was before his breathing problems. He's now on all 3 meds and is taking them and seems very happy that he's getting a bowl of Hills AD! Petplan have paid out as well so that's more good news but the main thing is he's doing OK. While he's happy and well we'll carry on.

Great news, long may it continue.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/11/2022 17:31

Preparing his medication! We decided it was easier to give him his own pill box! As you can see he's not remotely phased by it all.

I have the very same pill box for mine! Well done Harry. What a trooper Smile
