Kitten playing in litter tray

We have a 9 week old kitten that has been with us since Sunday. He seems to be settling in well. Have another cat who is slowly starting to get used to him.

Kitten insists on playing with his ball in his litter tray. Like he will pick the ball up in his mouth and carry it in to the tray where he proceeds to play in there, making an unholy mess! How do I get him to stop? I’ve actually started taking the tray away but can’t keep doing this for obvious reasons.

Any ideas?

Mine do this, it has subsided a lot as they have got older though.

i highly recommend a covered tray if you haven’t got one already. It’s a game changer!

Do you have carpets? Maybe he likes the noise and how fast that ball can move in a
nearly empty litter tray. - if so throw the ball on a smoother surface, bathroom floor or give him another empty tray to play in.
I second covered litter trays are the best and a good litter catcher mat or two. (Amazon not the pet at home ones).

We do actually have a covered litter tray somewhere from older cat. But I think kitten probs too small to use it at the minute. Maybe I’ll just buy another cheap tray for him to play in.
