At wits end with cat

Never thought I'd say this but I am absolutely desperate. My cat literally seems to hate us all. He's been checked over by the vet and is all healthy as far as they can see. He's quite affectionate and then will just turn and bite. He doesn't do this to anyone but me and my daughter. He's a lovely boy but by now my kids are scared of him and it is a nightmare. Any ideas? Or anyone in County Durham want a lively and lovely boy?

Do you mean he will suddenly bite when being petted, or that some days he his affectionate and others grumpy?

If the first, look up petting induced aggression. It's really quite common, you just need to watch out for the signs and give him space when he needs it.

Wild stab but as it is you and your DD on the recieving end could it be hormones ( on the human female side ?)

My old cat (when I was late 20s/early 30s) was female and behaved very differntly towards me , though not bitey .
When I was pregnant with my DS she was velcroed to me if I sat down.

Okay, lots of questions coming your way - most biting happens for a reason so hopefully this helps to narrow it down a little.

Does he go outside?
Does he get enough exercise/play/stimulation?
What happens on the lead up to the bites - is he being played with? Stroked? Fussed? Ignored?
What's his body language like when he bites? Are his ears back and pupils dilated? Does he growl or hiss or give any warning signs?
What's his diet like? Too much sugar/cereals can cause behavioural issues so a good quality food is important (assuming he doesn't refuse to eat it, lol).
Do the bites ever break the skin or are they more play bites?

Is he neutered ?
