We have x2 dogs already. I'd love a kitten. Would it work?

Depends on temperament of the dogs and your skill at integrating them. I had a dog and two adult cats but the dog was very soft and instantly deferred to the cats when they were introduced.

We have two cats and a big ol’ oaf of a soppy gun dog with zero prey drive. Half lab, half vizsla and the guy has never even chased a squirrel. He adores the cats and vice versa. They are all male.

What’s your dog like, OP? How’s its prey drive and is it a terrier/terrier mix?

MsMiaWallace · 22/10/2022 10:16

Dogs very laid back & lazy (pug & bulldog)

Both my cats were brought up with dogs when I inherited them, I have a very cute video of the kitten beating up her dog friend.
I don't have dogs.

I have cats and dogs, and the cats are definitely in charge. But it does depend on the temperament of all concerned and how they're introduced

I have a close relative who has a lovely, soft natured sprocker spaniel and two cats. One of the cats is definitely the boss, but the cats were there first (don't know if that would make a difference). No problems with them though, they all get on well and there's been no fighting or anything.

We have both, but the cat was here first, our dog is a Shiba Inu, so a fairly high prey drive, he learned very quickly as a puppy to not mess with cats. I would say they get along well, but the cat now wants to be besties with the dog, while the dog is very wary due to being on the sharp end so many times as a puppy, so he tries to keep out of her way.

You may be better off with a confident adult cat, particularly if you can find one that has previously lived with dogs.

Hellocatshome · 22/10/2022 11:22

I have 3 cats and 1 dog. All rescued so all adults when they met each other. They rub along ok. The dog will chase the cats off our bed if he decides he wants to sleep on there but once he's found his comfy spot he doesnt mind if they c

Posted too soon!

Come back and the smallest cat will stare at the dog until he leaves her some of his food. So no one really in charge. I would recommend rescuing an adult cat who has lived with dogs.

NDN has three dogs and a psychotic cat.
Cat seems to rule the roost.

I may have occasionally referred to NDN's cat elsewhere on MN.

Soubriquet · 22/10/2022 12:04

I do!

It works…sort of.

The cat has free roam upstairs. The dogs are confined to downstairs. She can can go downstairs if she wishes but has a way of escaping them.

She gets on really well with my smallest dog. They play. But my bigger dog enjoys chasing her so she tends to avoid her.

When my dh is downstairs, all 3 can lay together with no problems. When it’s just me, bigger girl seems to think the cat will take me away so chases her off.

LeMoo · 22/10/2022 12:07

Yes, easier in your situation but get a kitten so they grow up unafraid

Loobyloo68 · 24/10/2022 17:56

I've got a border x and a German shepherd. My cat doesn't bother with the terrier much apart from making him move off his bed so she can have it. She chases the shepherd round the house and garden . Definitely rules the roost.
