My son found a stray in the streEt about 9.

What are you trying to say? Is it really a stray or just following him home? Does it look skinny and dirty?

My son found a stray kitten in the street last night. I'd say it's somewhere between 3-6 months. Very thin and matted coat (longhair). But very friendly and affectionate.

Someone has cut some matts out of its coat.

Brought him home. He had a cable tie as a sort of collar but no contact details. Was hungry and thirsty.

We've got a cat - 2yo neutered male. Not impressed.

Separated them overnight, kitten in with son. He's just come down to say it slept on his bed all night and knows how to use a litter tray.

Will take to vet/rspca to scan for chip later

Any advice?

Vet for a scan is a good start.
Poor kitty sounds like it needs a hand. It might be lost.
If it's chipped/lost it (hopefully) will go back to its owner.
Have you thought about what to do if there isn't an owner?

Vet check is a good idea especially as you have your own kitty to think of. Otherwise cats protection have a lost and found page, or your local facebook page. At least it had food last night ❤

Was it definitely a cable tie? Some flea & tick collars like Seresto look a bit like one.

Any vets will scan for a chip (free of charge).

His face looks kind of mature? Maybe just an old soul 🙂 but sometimes skinny older cats gets mistaken for kittens. They often have trouble grooming themselves too, which might explain the matts, and can be ravenous hungry & thirsty with hyperthyroidism or kidney disease.

He may well be a stray, but just adding this as not all neglected-looking cats are - sometimes they are loved older cats living out their last few months or years (while looking a bit like bad taxidermy), but still enjoying life, so definitely check for a chip & put up flyers 🙂

Either way , kitten or old boy, he's got a gorgeous face, and if he is living rough he'll be very grateful to you.

He looks like an older un neutered Tom cat. Thank goodness he found you.

That cats been through trauma hasn’t he?

So update. I spoke to our vet and RSPCA and shared pics. They both said he was old. Also that the thing-round his neck was a flea collar 🥹

He had a lovely day laid on son's bed. Eating and drinking steadily. Using the litter tray.

RSPCA emailed this afternoon and said he was probably very local and to see if he'd leave. So brought him down to the hall, opened the door and he strolled off 🥲

Wouldn't be surprised if he comes back now he knows what a soft touch we are.

Well, at least he's had two good meals 😉

Maybe you will see him sunning himself in a window now you know he's around.
