Can I get a cat with looped carpets?

Hi, does anyone have experience of cats and looped carpets please? We’ve found a lovely 5yr old Birman who needs a new home, but we have looped pile carpets throughout the house (except downstairs kitchen and hallway). I will ask the owner who is rehoming re the cat’s behaviour but I wondered if it’s a definite no no or depends on the cat? I don’t want to bring her to live somewhere she could hurt her claws or damage our carpet. Can it work? Many thanks in advance

I’ve only ever found cats with the usual fur

My carpets are untouched, Girl cat destroys any kind of basket (like the ones you put in those Ikea square shelves) though (she prefers to stand to scratch stuff), the faux suede settee gets a bit of a going over (and is coping amazingly - no serious damage after 3 years, super impressed with it). Boy cat prefers wooden objects outside, doesn't scratch indoors at all.

One of mine started scratching the carpet, so I got a rug for that area as a deterrent. Unfortunately he thinks its a plaything and likes to hide under it. But they are so cute playing I don't mind.

For those with cats who like horizontal scratching, tip the scratch pole on its side.

Thank you, all the responses are really helpful. It’s dh who bought up the carpets issue so it’s good I have a range of experiences now we can use to make a decision. I’ve had cats before but he hasn’t so we both need to know what we’re getting into before going for it. Thanks again 😊

Well after chatting with the owner we decided to go for it. She’s only been here about an hour or so but I suspect we won’t give a shit about the carpet because she’s so beautiful.

She is rather special, she will get away with worse than ragging the carpet.

Come and take a look at my landing and you’ll quickly make your mind up! 😳

I’m taking all my loop carpets up soon as my three have utterly destroyed them!

erikbloodaxe · 01/10/2022 19:34

3 cats, every conceivable scratching thing known to man are available and they use them. A lot! I have big holes at all the bedroom doors (even thou I put down carpet shields, I think they saw them as a challenge) and they have destroyed the stairs carpet ( for the second time). They rule the house though. Funnily they've never bothered the furniture so there is that I suppose.

Nor according to my carpet fitters. First question he asked was if I had pets and said not to get looped.

I have a 13 year old Birman and she just uses a chair instead 😂.

Get the cat, Birmans are the best. SO affectionate.

Beautiful! I’ve read about how affectionate they are, this girl is amazing- she doesn’t (rightly) feel confident enough yet to come out from under the bed but if you put your hand under to her she immediately rolls over demanding a belly rub. I’m smitten already!

They are cuddlemonsters. I can't imagine getting any other kind of cat.
