What to do - possible 'stray' cat

There is a cat lingering by bins close to where I live. 9 times out of 10 I see the cat when I walk past the area, either sleeping or going through bins.

I don't know if it's a stray but I am worried about it. It looks quite small and is nervous when approached. I'm not sure what to do - there is a chance it has a home nearby but hangs out at this spot, but on the other hand maybe it doesn't?

I'm not sure what to do in a situation like this - do cat charities help possible strays?

If it’s going through the bins I’d assume lost or straying. Can you feed it a pouch of food?

I'd try to contact Cats Protection for advice. And give it some food

We had a stray coming in our garden. Advice was to feed it same time each day so you know when it will appear. You can then speak to a rescue and arrange to borrow a cage and trap it. We sent a pic of our one and they said straight away he's a stray - may be easier said than done though as they are all full to bursting at the moment.

Feed it and get it scanned for a micro chip. Some smaller rescues will have volunteers that will come out and scan. I cat napped a cat who was a stray and obviously struggling. He lined out his last weeks in comfort with a full tummy.
