Devastated- my young cat was PTS last night

So upset, my sassy, beautiful three year old cat had to be PTS late last night. She was a rescue and I had had her for two years.

She ate her dinner as usual, was a bit quiet around the time I went to bed but nothing alarming. My DH came to tell me a bit later that he had just seen her drag herself down to the basement. Went to find her and she looked awful, unable to move her hind legs, breathing really rapidly and seemingly in pain. Took her straight to out of hours vet hospital. She was rushed to the back room as soon as the vet nurse saw her but it was too late. She had arterial thromboembolism (blood clot) and her back legs were already completely paralysed, no pulse, no sensation. She was put on strong painkillers but you could tell her she was in immense pain panting and with her mouth frothing.
The vet said there was nothing they could do. I could see she was suffering and had to make a quick decision to have her PTS.

I'm in bits today going over everything that happened over and over again. Did I miss something, could I have noticed something sooner, did I rush the decision to put her down (don't think I did, the vet said there was nothing they could do)..

Apparently this is fairly common in cats but I had never heard of it before. Just can't believe my beautiful girl is gone so unexpectedly and so young.

Our other cat seems very confused and needy today. She's always lived with other cats and doesn't like being alone at all so we may have to consider getting a new cat for her sake sooner rather than later.

Not really after any advice, just can't believed this has happened and keep thinking how she was completely normal all day yesterday.

I'm so sorry you had to put your lovely cat to sleep. It sounds like you did the right thing for her. Sending you huge hugs. It's making me teary even thinking about loosing our bat cat, so you must be devastated.😿

Clarich007 · 23/09/2022 12:35

So so sorry your lovely cat had to go through this. You must be devastated. I think it's also called a saddle thrombus.
I'm sure you didn't miss anything, or could have done anything to prevent it.
It's the shock of the whole thing. Take care 💐

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/09/2022 12:47

It’s a totally random event, you could own cats all your life and prevent it. I’m so sorry it’s awful seeing them like that but you got her to the vets immediately which was all you could do.

FoxyLadyBoutique · 23/09/2022 12:52

Oh no, I’m so sorry. Hugs.

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 23/09/2022 12:52

So sorry 💐

Toddlerteaplease · 23/09/2022 13:27

So sorry. It was the only thing you could have done.

EatYourFive · 23/09/2022 13:59

Thanks everyone. This is so hard.. I had to have my rabbit but to sleep a few years ago but it didn't feel this bad. Maybe because she was sickly leading up to it and every treatment option was exhausted.
I miss her so much, she would only accept affection when it suited her but she liked being the in the same room with us, always following us around. Feels so weird not having her climb over my keyboard when I am trying to work.

Thanks @Clarich007 for that term saddle thrombus, I googled it and some of the descriptions are exactly what she went through last night including the fluid build up in lungs. It was also somehow reassuring to read that the outcome is usually poor as I keep asking myself if I should have insisted on some treatment before having her PTS, she was just in so much pain I couldn't watch it. 😢

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss, how awful for you all Flowers

Know she was loved 🥰

caringcarer · 23/09/2022 14:54

She will know she was loved and at the end you did to he last service you could for her, not let her longer in n pain. So sorry for your poor kitty.

musicalmrs · 23/09/2022 23:51

I'm so sorry @EatEatYourFive . When it's so quick like that you go over everything in your head and through all the what ifs. She knew she was loved.

We had our kitten PTS today. Was fine up until this morning, when some odd toileting and her being a bit lethargic made us take her to the vets. She deteriorated very quickly, bloods were shocking and we had no choice but to PTS. Having taken her on for what we thought was a stomach bug or food intolerances, we're shocked and devastated. We're playing the What If game right now..

Clarich007 · 24/09/2022 11:38

Oh so sorry Music. What a shock for you.
It's devastating.Take care

LT2 · 24/09/2022 11:42

I'm so sorry.

I lost 2 young cats a few years ago to FIP. It's so awful losing them, so young especially.

CanIbeRio · 24/09/2022 11:46

My friend's cat suffered with exactly this. Literally fine in the morning.....had passed away by early evening. It was devastating for her, but absolutely nothing she could have done....like you, she questioned it over and over. It is a cruel condition. Be kind to yourself 💐....im so sorry for the loss of your lovely cat

EatYourFive · 25/09/2022 09:36

Thanks everyone. This morning my other cat was staring at the bedroom door before I got up, clearly expecting her companion to walk in like she used to do every morning (I always shut them out of the bedroom at night because the cat that was PTS would keep me awake and they would come in for a cuddle first thing). Broke my heart all over again to see her waiting like that, wish there was a way to explain what has happened.

@musicalmrs I'm so sorry to hear about your kitten, that's heartbreaking. It's just awful when this happens to the young ones. When you decide to get a cat you prepare for a 15-20 year commitment, not for a couple of short years or like in your case, just a few weeks. 😢
