Cat friends or foe

Looking for positive stories of cats that were enemies that became friends? I have a boy kitten (9months) and I recently rescued a girl kitten (approx 5/6 months)
She stayed in her own room for a couple of weeks whilst settling in/having her spay, but she was desperate to get out so I have been taking in turns with access to the lounge (boy goes outside to) whilst doing lots of scent swapping. Girl would growl if she accidentally caught sight of boy and wasn’t keen on his scent but I thought I would try introduce them through a stair gate, Boy was curious, Girl growled but I persevered with love and treats… but then Girl jumped the gate and attacked Boy, scratching his nose and ever since then they have been desperate to get to each other (stalking doors, changing their behaviour) and if they do managed to they fight like their going to kill each other!
At the moment I am trying to keep them separate with great difficulty… I’m worried I’m going to have to give her back to the rescue!
I have a feliway plug in and the have separate everything (litter tray, food bowls)

It doesn't sound promising. Personally if my cats were fighting like that I would return the new one - it's simply (to me) not worth the risk..
