Cat not eating

My cat has a massive infection in his lung. He has been in hospital on IV antibiotics and has now come home on oral antibiotics. He was happy to eat when on IV antibiotics, but now he's had the oral ones he won't eat.
Is this normal when on ABs?
Has anyone any experience?

Are you putting the antibiotics in his food or into his mouth? When one of mine was on antibiotics he was extremely huffy about both, and we broke the pills into pieces and hid them inside bits of treats (pieces of those cat peperami things are great for this) which did the trick.

Because he's not eating, we are having to put them in his mouth.
He getting very weak, I'm not sure if he will last through the night. 😔

Have you tried cat soups or Lik e lix?

Giraffapuses · 09/09/2022 21:09

Things to try

  1. Add flakes of chicken
  2. Try those cat soups (Google cat soup). They are not a complete meal but better than nothing
3 warm food up
  1. Syringe (no needle) filled with food
  2. Cat milk. Again not complete meal but will be some calories

I would try something very tempting like tuna or lik e lix. If he won't even eat those then I'd speak to an emergency vet. I hope he recovers soon.

Isaidnoalready · 09/09/2022 21:11

Is he drinking? Peeing? On metacam or anything?

Mine is on antibiotics his appetite has dropped a little but he is overweight anyway they are upsetting his stomach a little too so I'm feeding him then medicating him

birdling · 09/09/2022 21:12

He has had some water and has used his litter tray once I think. He just has no energy at all. I'll try some of these ideas. Thanks

If you’ve got a smooth cat food like the Sheba trays, you can mix with a little water and syringe feed every hour. Just two or three syringes at a time. The hope is once he is forced to eat he will resume on his own so always offer food before syringing.
You could also ask the vet to give you some mirtazapine to increase appetite.

Giraffapuses · 09/09/2022 21:15

There also many online vets open 24/7. Can be done from home and most will look at the cat via Web cam. I hope he makes a full recovery.

Janesdufflecoat · 09/09/2022 23:24

An you get him an antibiotic injection?
They last around a week I think, my cat used to have them instead of tablets because no way would we have got tablets down him!

MeriPenomause · 09/09/2022 23:28

What about a little bit of honey on a spoon? The sugars in it may give him enough energy to try eating. As far a food goes try warming whatever it is as the smell of warmed food could help too. Hope he's ok

birdling · 09/09/2022 23:38

We warmed up some tuna and he had a couple of mouthfuls. I spoke to the on call vet, who said not to worry too much.
Thanks for all of the advice.

Try sprinkling nutritional yeast on food - you can buy it in Holland and Barrett or Amazon.
It smells cheesy and cats love it.
It really helped my elderly cat get eating again after a nasty bout of pancreatitis last year.

birdling · 10/09/2022 13:07

Thank you everyone. I took him back to the vet this morning, but unfortunately he wasn't going to get better. It turns out that it was cancer rather than an infection.
I had to make the right decision for him. 😭
I am heartbroken, but know that I did the right thing. It was time.
