Wound on back

Hello. My boy has a cut on his back, i noticed he was licking it about a week ago. I called the vet to book his jabs in but the earliest they could do is mid sept - I booked it in and asked them about the cut. They said just to keep it clean and keep an eye on it for any signs of infection. I've been cleaning it when I can with cooled boiled water and it looked like it was getting better for a while but yesterday I noticed he has licked it so much that it's basically going bald. The wound itself is open where he's licking it so much.

Our vets has recently closed one branch so merged into one, and they told me on the phone they have nothing else other than life or death emergencies for a few weeks other wise I would take him to get checked. We have the appointment for his jabs next week so i'll ask them to take a look but do you think I should get him a collar to wear for a while to stop him licking it? Will this give it a chance to heal properly?

He's fine in himself. Still eating /drinking etc. The wound doesnt smell, its slightly swollen but he allows me to clean him without crying etc. He goes out once a day in the evening and has been known to tussle with other cats which is where I assume this came from.

I hope he is still doing okay - a while ago my cat had an abscess which he burst and chewed and licked on 😫but the vet said that he had done the best thing for himself by keeping it clean so it is not always bad if they are licking a wound.

Though I can't believe your vet would wait so long - I'd be considering other vets if that is an option for you as my vet is always available on the day if there is something like a wound. Especially if they will only take "life or death" emergencies for weeks - that is a sign to try another even if it means travelling a bit if that is possible for you.

Thanks, I have him booked for Monday, they’ve recently merged two surgeries hence the issue with appointments they’re usually very very good!

he is still ok but they’ll see him Monday anyway to check x
