Dog eating cat food...

My small terrier (who turns her nose up at her own dry food)...eats the cat's dry food as often as she can sneak in. I'm sure this isn't good for her. Definitely not good for her waistline! How do you avoid this if you have cats and dogs. Cats demand food multiple times daily...eat a few mouthfuls...wander off and cue watchful dog sneaks in.

Fees the cat on a higher level maybe so the dog can't get to it

I have to keep the cat food on the dining table, thankfully no one eats at the table it's used as a dumping ground for everyone's clutter or me folding laundry, the cat also eats the dog food but thankfully the dog empties her bowl quite quick!

I don't think the cat food will do any harm to the dog, other than the getting fat thing from eating too much.

As others have said, feed the cat somewhere high, or if you are feeling extravagant, they do microchip cat feeders, so the bowl would close when cat wanders off.

I feed my cat and dog in separate rooms, separated by a safety gate the cat can fit under but the dog can't. I just have to make sure the gates shut properly. Must be a terrier thing, mine would eat me if I sat still long enough

Feed the cat at a hight.

The cat food is bad for the dog's health.
I cant remember exactly why (excesst protein, higher fats?) but the cat food is designed for obligate carnivores while dogs are omnivores so long term it harms the dogs liver and kidneys.

Get the cat a microchip feeder

Teatotally · 03/09/2022 22:42

Microchip cat feeders are really difficult to find at the moment. The Surefeed ones were 70 pounds on Amazon a year ago, now they cost £199!! I got one from Argos which was £130 but they have now sold out. And Pets at Home seem to have run out of stock. Also, only one of my cats will use it. The other is scared of the movement! You may be able to get a second hand one on ebay. I have the same problem and the cats are currently being fed on the kitchen counter which is not very hygenic!

Our three cats are fed on the counters as well as behind a baby gate. Cat biscuits are left out in the kitchen and the dog has no free access to it.

He loves cat food though - I use it to practise his recall 🤣 in small doses it's absolutely fine and won't do any harm.

We have a cat that steals the dogs food she's refusing cat food at the moment
