Should I get another cat?

I know the heart answer is always more cats, but I’m torn what to do.

DCat is 12 and since we moved house 2yrs ago is mostly living in our neighbours garden. He comes to us for food 2-3x week (despite us trying everything short of locking him in, including knocking our neighbour to collect him!) . He steals their cats food and I think one of my other neighbours is feeding him outside - although they have denied this.

He isn’t keen on our 2 kids (4&5) and never has been. He’s my cat really, he tolerates other people as long as they feed him.

We’d really like to have a cat who was friendly, maybe even liked the children, would come in the house etc
we’ve got a garden and live rurally (no busy roads, down a lane)
Current DCat is living his best life outside and in outbuildings hunting to his hearts content. Im expecting him back for winter evenings when the fire gets lit.

I worry another cat/cats/kitten would properly drive him away, although he is friendly with the other local cats and did have a brother here until last year.

and no guarantee a new cat would be friendly or be in our house.

so cat people, what do we do?? More cats now? wait until DCat pops his clogs? Lock him in until he likes the kids (never gonna happen!)

What does he do for shelter in the winter?

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/08/2022 19:13

Sorry you answered that, what if new cat chased him away completely and he couldn’t use the out buildings?

I’d be totally guilt ridden!

I think we’re going to see what happens this winter, if he comes back in as it gets colder, and decide next year. I think he might have actually moved out.

he doesn’t come when I call him anymore.
saw him yesterday laid in the middle of my neighbours garden table washing his arse while they were sat having a brew Grin

he’s a fantastic cat - an absolute using, entitled, murdering arsehole!

Are they child free next door? Maybe he doesn’t like kids.
