Best way to introduce a new cat?

3 years ago we had 2 kittens from the same litter who always got in brilliantly but sadly one was run over a couple of weeks ago Sad. We're all heartbroken to have lost him, but having another to focus on definitely softened the blow and it would have been even worse if we'd lost our one and only cat.

We'd like to get another cat in the next few months, probably a kitten but I'm not sure of the best way to introduce one to our household?

Our remaining cat is a very gentle 3 yo girl who got on brilliantly with her brother, they used to cuddle up together and groom each other 😭. There are plenty of other cats around here and she's not territorial or argumentative and is generally a bit of a pushover. Any advice please?

Your cat would probably prefer another boy rather than a girl in the household.

When you get your new cat, (this will sound weird), let the two cats make friends with each other before old cat sees you be friendly with new cat. They will both settle more quickly this way.

Remember to put an extra litter tray out if needed (the usual rule is one litter tray per cat plus on extra so 2 cats = 3 litter trays).

Feed them separately to prevent resource guarding.

A lot of people recommend Feliway. I haven’t used it yet but would definitely buy some if I were introducing a new cat.

Thank you @DifficultBloodyWoman, much appreciated. That's really helpful advice.

Hi , I am in a similar position in that my 5 year old cat was killed by a car last week and his litter brother is looking for him, seems very unsettled and we are wondering if eventually we will need to get him a companion, just worried about how that might go.
im interested in how it went for you ?
thanks
